Chilling Cambelt gone at 12.239 miles. Full story!!!!

Alfa 147 1.6Ts first registered Nov 2003.
12,000 mile service done at 12,155 miles Standard service.
At 12,239 miles whilst negotiating a sharp bend into works carpark. Noise
like belt going under bonnet ( have had fan belt break on another vehicle
many years ago ) and engine stopped. NO nasty metal noises.
AA diagnosed cam belt as camshaft not turning when turning engine over on
starter. NO nasty metal noises.
At Victoria Park Motors in Cardiff, many scratched heads. Cambelt cover
removed. Belt split longitudinally into 2 and transverse across 1/2 . 5
teeth scrubbed off other 1/2 of belt.
Fitted new belt, checked com pressions, within factory guideline pressures.
However, took off camshaft/head. No marks on piston heads but 2 valves not
freely moving compared with others. Not same cylinder. Valves/guides
replaced head certified within tolerance. Refitted to engine, started and
ran well but engineer thought variator was noisy, therefore stripped down
and new variator fitted.

Picked up car today, washed and vacuumed. I think they put a 2L back because
from 3000 revs the power just keeps on coming. Couldn't resist it on the way
home, BMW in front who didn't know the road.

According to garage a foreign object went through the cambelt cover and
damaged the belt.

How possible, How plausible??????

All fixed under warranty.

If she drives better then ever before, I personally think you had a problem from day 1. Probably a weak part which can happen of course; I know a GT owner who damaged his engine within 560 kms from new due to a weak crankshaft bearing. ***** happens.

Important issue is that all is fixed under warranty so you can go back and enjoy your Alfa again.

Speaking as a non-mechanic

Sounds to me like the valves were outside tolerance from new, and the strain on the belt caused the inevitable. Would also have sucked the power as well.

Lucky all round - didn't happen at a critical 6000 rpm moment , warranty repair , mechanic actually listened to car after first part of work done .

Go bash some more beemers

Thanks Selespeed.
However, if the M3 driver doesn't know the road!!!!.
This road used to be 3 lanes. The council decided in its wisdom to make it 2 ( no accidents overtaking on this stretch ), so if you are behind, know when the double whites end and are quick with the gearchange down, indicator and accelerator its possible.
I've had the honour to take an XK8,XKR and Porche 911 and if they are not quick enough of the mark they cannot get back in before the double whites return.

Hi
Live in South africa and here cambelts are being replaced like mad.
Mine got 80000 km on the clock and replaced allready two times including tensioner, variator and bearing. They blame it on italys weak cambelt and our climate(very warm). Some peolple say i must fit a goodyear cambelt. Can anyone confirm that

not sure how the climate thing works, italy is a hot country too, tensioners and bearings quality seem to be the more likely problem, these should always be changed with the belts, its just a shame that the fiat group havent sorted this out, after all these years.
