oil leak - likely source?

evening chaps

I thought i would try and track down an annoying small leak somewhere on big norma....i've cleaned up things to try and track it down and replaced the cam cover gasket (don't think it was that but had a spare anyway and the block was a wee bit moist on the front left) but what are the other likely sources? It's not a big leak as she's using **** all oil but when the car comes to a halt at a junction or roundabout a really strong smell comes into the cabin (presumably from the oil burning on the exhaust/cat) so i'd really like to nail it!

Before i cleaned it there did seem to be a fair coating on the sump, oil filter and the bell housing.....suppose it saves on under sealing

I had oil leak from the exhaust studs, Removing them and coating with stud seal before replacing has fixed it. This was on a jts engine leaking from the studs for no 3 cylinder. Pete.

That would tie up for the approx area of the leak (i think) - more drips this morning from the end of the oil filter so I really need to try and nail this...

okay - i think it might be the cam cover after all as there appears to have been oil running down the cam belt cover and i think maybe the oil dripping from the bell housing is because it's normally parked at an angle with the oil running in that direction. So how much can the cam cover leak? And bearing in mind i've swapped the seal what's the next thing? Some silcone on the rubber? Or can the plastic cover get damaged/warped??

i've got a small oil leak, ruining the path, but not appearing to use any oil. Also get the burning smell when I stop. Had it in yesterday and they've diagnosed the sump gasket needs re-sealing, so possibly one to check.

okay, just to wrap this thread up it turned out to be the dipstick seal - £2.50 and 2 mins work and it all seems good....old one was like it was made of plastic it was so hard and it was all a bit mangled....
