Noisy 147 TS Engine

My 1.6 engine has developed an embarassing clicking noise. It's only noticeable from outside the car and when the engine is warm. The noise appears to be coming from lower down the engine rather than near the cover. It seems to be only on the left hand side and is most noticable when you're down near the drivers side wheel. The speed of the clicking increases with revs. The best way I can describe it is like a noisy tappet - just like an old Talbot Sunbeam/Ranger engine! - but it doesn't seem to be coming from the right area.

Anyone got any Ideas? It seems to dissappear after driving over 4000rpm for a while, but a few miles of chugging along in traffic and it returns.

Sounds like your cam variator is on its way out.

Do you know when the cam belt was last done?

Re: Noisy 147 TS Engine

Does it sound like there there are loose nuts and bolts rattling in the bottom of the engine? or does it sound like a diesel. The variator usually gives a diesel type noise whereas loose nuts and bolts sound usually points to big end failure. Variators can just wear on their own, but bottom end issues are caused by running low on oil or a previous cambelt failure.

It might even be an issue with the auxillary belt tensioner, has it ever been replaced?
