Warning JTD Cambelt Intervals

re my 2008 GT 1.9JTDm cloverleaf:

My dealer has just written to me saying that the cambelt needs to be replaced at 36 months (service and MOT due end July).

Have I missed something? Alfa haven't changed the cambelt intervals on the diesels have they? I was planning to do a change at 4 years and get the water pump done at the same time.

I bet they didn't mention the waterpump in their letter did they?

Easy way of getting work in, but your car does not need its cambelt changing, unless it is coming up to around 50k miles or so and then I would start to think about getting it done as the waterpumps often fail a long time before 72k.

Alfa officially have not changed there interval although they should, we recommend 4 years or 45-50k, if you are planning on keeping the car it canít hurt to do it early. Dealer is trying to make a bit of cash from you. One of our customers was quoted a grand to do a belt on a 1.9 GT

Also note 159 1.9 JTD with exactly the same engine has a 5 year or 90k service interval, we will be repairing a few of those then

Yeah I'm doing my 2.4 20v every 48k. Seen too many posts about water pumps failing at 50-55k to take the risk!

For about £140ish including a water pump (DIY job) it's not too bad really......apart from the clearance issues on the 5 pot that is

Look at the failure thread, most of the failures are a lot less than that. But again, we change loads of timing belts & water pumps bang on the button at 72k that haven't failed, some even older than that.

I think its pretty safe to say there is no "safe limit", just a very big grey area of increasing likelihood of failure.

Thanks guys - I suspect the desk monkey in the dealer hasn't realised that "JTDm" means "diesel"!

I might phone them up and see if this significant change in the stated intervals will be covered by the warranty!
