A little Worried Re: Cambelt Change

I recently had my car serviced at Lyles of Newcastle. I asked for a full service and cambelt change as the car was 5 years old though had only covered 39500 miles. However I am not sure what work has been carried out.
On the receipt under 'Work Done' it says 72000 mile service (full). Under parts used it says Cambelt (part no. 94590). There is no mention of a Tensioner or a Variator which I believe, after reading on here, should have been changed too.

Your advice would be appreciated.

Re: A little Worried Re: Cambelt Change

When I got quotes for mine, I was asked by all the garages I contacted whether I wanted the variator replaced, so I think that one may have been missed off if you didn't instruct them to change it.

However, they all said that the tensioners would have to be changed. I can't remember if they were listed on the receipt tho'. Sorry.

If the variator was healthy they just left it ... the tensioner I would change anayway...
but its better to go for the full monty, only thing is that customers complain about the high bill.. so the garage did you a favor (money wise)

Re: A little Worried Re: Cambelt Change

I just spoke to the Service Manager. He said the Tensioner would have been thoroughly checked (the bearing & the self adjusting mechanism?) and would have been changed had there been any doubt in it's condition. I'm not really worried about the Variator - it's fine.

Can I sleep at night?

It still doesn't explain the mention "72k services" performed. After 5 years, it would have been considered as the 60k service during which all sparkplugs must be changed. This may have not been done because your car has less than 60k though....

Re: A little Worried Re: Cambelt Change

I was told that Alfa Romeo now recommend a '72000 mile service' when the car is 5 years old.
I was also told the spark plugs didn't need changing until it reached 60000 miles.

Another thing. They used Agip Extra HTS 5w-40 oil. Never heard of this before but it seems fine.

Apologies if this is turning in to a rant.

Re: A little Worried Re: Cambelt Change

Hi,

A 72k service is the major one, including cambelt. You asked for a full service including cambelt change. Thats probably why on the recipts its listed a "72k service"

On all cars where you change a cambelt, its mandatory to change the tensioner as well. A propper garage would never forget to change that. Save your recipt, if you get a surprise next year you know how will pay for a replacement engine.

Sleep well, don't worry.

Dan ( I just got my selespeed replaced at 52k, )

Around 400 depending on whether you go for semi or fully synthetic oil.
