156 2.0 TS - Variator / Cam Belt

Hi All,

Need some advice...

Got a 2001 156 2.0 TS, with diesel rattle, so guessing variator needs changing.

Cambelt was changed just before i brought car 1500 miles ago, now on 85,000 miles.

1) can the vari be changed with new cambelt and pulleys in situ ? Or can they be refitted - with no risk to failing ?

2) does a new kit need fitting ?

3) anyone recommend a specialist (non dealer) in doncaster ?

4) rough costings ?

Thanks for all your help

The CAM belt is attached to the CAM Pulley this is then attached to the Variator which is attached to the CAM shaft. You will need to remove the CAM belt to replace the Variator...

Is there only a rattle on startup?

Thanks for the reply biffa,

She rattles on idle, through to about 2 1/2 - 3 K revs.

Power / response seems ok.

From the reciepts on purchase included with documents, i can see the purchase of cam kit, but no variator......

From what i have read, the diesel noise is a sign of failing variator.

I know they are about 100 quid parts, and then labour on top...

Just need a competent garage to fit :-)

Thanks

Chris

Try an oil change ... they are noisy if the oil is thin. 10W40 semi should be fine.

And replace the cambelt if it comes off .. never put a used belt back on! You will probably be OK on tensioners, etc. But the 2.0 has a balance belt that also has to come off, so a new one of those too is probably on the shopping list.

Whoever you get to do the belts MUST use camlocks .. don't let them fob you off with tippex, etc ... it isn't going to work.
