156 V6 Cambelt Am I Pushing My Luck?

I had a 36k service done on my 1999 V6 six months ago by a Fiat/Alfa specialist. As part of the service they checked the cambelt and said it was fine.

My car is now at 39k and is still running really well. In any case I'm aware a cambelt is an engine out job and would like to keep a very close eye on it before the next service. Is there any way of telling the cambelt may be on its way out by a sound or visual inspection?

Has anyone had any experience of a cambelt going before 60k?

I'm definately going to get it done at the next service.

I've read on here that 50k is about right but no idea if that's based on a concrete reason.

However, yours is getting of for about 5 years old so I would replace it anyway.

No, you only know when it is too late. No visual inspection can tell you that it is ok for another year.

Get it done, your belt is now 5-years old, it is now recommended to change them at 36000miles or 3-years (whatever comes first).

Intersesting you say they need changing that often David. I thought the V6 was Ok for up to 72K miles on the belt. I know the 4 pots are a bit more often but had the impression that the V6 was safe for the full 72K ?

3 years sounds sensible though.

I`ve got a loud tapping/clicking noise in time with the engine revs on mine. Its on its second belt and at 138K miles, just about 2 years since first changing at 72K miles, so its nearly ready for number 3. Anyone had a similar noise? It seems to be from under the top of the belt cover but its not easy to tell. Is it worth me taking the cover off and looking? Would I be able to check anything myself on any belts, pullys, wheels etc ? Is it ok to run the engine with the cover off (if I keep my fingers out )?

The noise sounds like the tensioner or some auxillary unit bearing or something from that area. car drives Ok but the power steering can go very stiff on low rev right turns some times. The garage says its a proper inspection to check it out and financially this means I may as well have the next 72K miles service now. Its a pain because its just had an interimn service.

I remember there have been a few reports on here of V6 belts failing around 60k. Persuaded me to change mine when it was next serviced, coincidentaly 60k.

Re: 156 V6 Cambelt Am I Pushing My Luck?

I got mine done at 41k miles after I read a lot about premature failures on this site and the variator making that 'diesel' sound on start-up.
While my car was in getting done, there was a V6 166 with 59k on the clock, getting engine re-built after a cambelt failure. The guy was getting charged about 3k.

I would say get it done before it gets you done...

Re: 156 V6 Cambelt Am I Pushing My Luck?

Thanks for the advice. Incedently I was only asking as I'm selling and didn't want to pass any "risks" on to someone else.

Also if there is absouloutly no way of telling if a cambelt is in good shape or not then there really is no point of having it "checked" at the
36000 service and may as well be replaced.

Although it looks to me that Alfa may be putting fear into their customers and reaping the benefits. After all the fact is Fiat/Alfa is not a hugely grossing company in the UK compared to other car manufacturers.

Cheers

Re: 156 V6 Cambelt Am I Pushing My Luck?

A belt is a belt, and only one which is weakened significantly will be visable as being 'worn'. That point is not defined, and depends on all of the following: heat of the engine, grade of the rubber, frequency of use, type of use... Finding a belt in such a state would be pure luck due to the stresses placed on them... weakness causes them to snap quickly.
So, the rule is, change early and reduce the risk of a failure occuring.

It goes along the same lines as wear and tear... high use often, high repair often.

Phooey, thats an 800 service. Oh well.

Anyone remember the name of the Alfa specialist just west of Leeds? Thought I might try them out for a cheaper price.

Italian sounding name (so that probably doesn`t help )
