156 Jtd Engine oil leak from filler cap

Alfa 159 Jtd (8v) 53 plate facelift (117k miles)

I have just acquired the car, and don’t know anything about its history.

Car starts first time, and runs ok, without being too sluggish.
Oil is leaking out through the engine oil filler cap. With filler cap off, oil is blowing out with more air than is normal.

When accelerating and revs are above approx 2300, there is a whining noise from the turbo.

The intercooler air pipe is split from where it fits the rocker cover at the top of the engine. Air does leak out from here when revved.

I am looking for an air pipe, new or used, any suggestions where to get one?

Been told that the engine is “breathing” too much which can be due to the piston rings being worn, which is causing a loss in compression, pushing oil out through the cap. If compression lost, wouldn’t the car have difficulties in starting?

Will replacing the air pipe cure the oil leak from filler cap and quieten the turbo? Or should I be looking at some other part?

Worn rings could be pressurising the engine .. but you would probably have running and starting issues too... lots of smoke out the exhaust and general lumpiness. Your car is "not too sluggish".. which suggests it's also "not too nippy".. ?

The only way to see what's good and what isn't is to get the beast properly plumbed as the maker intended. Fit that pipe (rgwm on here might have one) and then see if the symptoms persist or change or go away.

The turbo whine could just be extra noise because the pipe is split or it could be a separate problem..

Also check the oil level. It only has to be up to "MAX".. not any fuller. If it's over-filled at the moment you could be getting the pumping symptoms because of that.

Hi Ralph,
I will get onto replacing the pipe, and see how it goes.
