156 JTD 20V Injectors.

Hi,

I'm just about to purchase a 2004 156 JTD 20V Estate, but have been told by the seller that an injector has 'gone down' (which he will repair before sale). The car has around 100K miles on the clock but Alfa history and well looked after from what I can see.

My question is how reliable are the pump / injectors on this engine and should I expect further issues at this mileage ?.

Any assistance / feedback gratefully received.

Kind regards,

John.

These engines are not known for injector/pump problems and these glorious engines themselves are very strong. Gearbox/clutch/DMF/driveshaft problems are, however common on the 20v and are the usual worries on purchase. Is this an Alfa specialist? If not, I would be a little worried about the quality of any repairs. If you have a laptop then a £10 lead off eBay and a free download of FiatEcuScan will allow you to read engine parameters including the injector correction values which will tell you if you have a problem injector. These engines are a bit of a challenge to work on and I would also make sure the timing/aux belts/tensioner/water pump are not due (5 years and 60,000miles) as the job is expensive. Good luck,

Keith

Hi Gammakeith,

Many thanks for your response - very useful feedback.

I don't actually know who will carry out the injector repair, but the car will come with a warranty thankfully !.

Is there a part number for the lead and do I need any corresponding software for the download of data ?.

I will check all the issues you highlight before pressing the 'go' button !.

Kind regards,

John.

Hi John,

A basic VAG KKL or ELM lead will allow you to read the engine ECU. If you want to read ABS/PS & air bag then you will need adapters or a modified lead (Rarebear sells them on this site). If you search for FiatEcuScan on this site (or go to the website) then you will find all the info you need.

Good luck,

Keith

If the injector is being replaced I believe it also needs to be coded to the ECU, which only Examiner can do (I think).
