jtd aux noise (not squeek)

i just replaced my cambelt on my 2.4 jtd and the aux tensioner as it was dry sounding . the new one i want to know how to tension correctly .

it seams to move too much and makes a tapping / knocking sound at idle and at certian revs.

anyone got an air box for one of these too?

hope to be re fitting the belt tonight with another roller i didn't get in time for the belt change

If you search you'll find the details. However, in brief, the tension is not intially done through the 'tensioner' with the spring. You basically slacken the eccentric pulley (by the engine mount) and then rotate that to tension the belt against the spring loaded tensioner until two locating holes align. Its a bit of a pig of a job!!

i am not sure what you mean by "until the two location holes aline"

i see the tensioner roller and got it nice and tight last night and nipped it up again as although i done this before i thought maybe i didnt do it enough.

but after doing that againg the noise is still there but maybe not as much i dont know .

could it be the crankshaft damper gone ? i have no idea what to look for when one of these start to go

There is a hole in the moving bit of the spring loaded aux tensioner. When belt tension is correct (ie the spring is compressed by the correct amount) a drill bit (or the special Alfa tool) will slide through this hole into a corresponding hole into the backplate behind. The actual tensioning process is done by the eccentric pulley. Its a hard job if you don't lower the engine (at least on the 20V) and you need some long nosed pliers (or something similar) to rotate the eccentric pulley.
