Cambelt replacement cost

Hi Peeps,

I've received a quote of 580 to get the following work done on my 156:

- cambelt
- balance-shaft belt
- cambelt tensioner
- balance-shaft belt tensioner
- variator

I've read on here some people paying around the 400 mark for this kind of work? If so, I'd like to know where please! I am based in Buckinghamshire.

TIA

Re: Cambelt replacement cost

One thing you can do is buy all the bits yourself from EB Spares and then approach a local guy to fit them for labour only. They might even do this for cash in hand as they have no purchases to make).

(I am assuming you are not from the Inland Revenue!)

Re: Cambelt replacement cost

My local independant Alfa specialist in Lancashire charged 280 all in for replacing my belt & pulleys on my 156 1.8TS.
The variator costs about another 80 he told me (but he could tell that mine was OK and didn't need changing). The 2.0 has an extra pully because of the balancer shaft, so there's a bit more cost there.
I'd guess therefore that 400 - 450 would be a reasonable charge for a specialist non-dealer garage for a 2.0 with variator.

Re: Cambelt replacement cost

400-450 is more like it!

And no, I don't work for the Inland Revenue and would have no problems whatsoever getting the parts from EB Spares - it's just knowing where to go to have them fitted, and if for cash, even better

Re: Cambelt replacement cost

If the 580 quote was from a main dealer then that is about right.
An independent Alfa specialist with lower labour rates will lower that cost to around the 400 area.

Re: Cambelt replacement cost

The figure was quoted from an Alfa specialist, not a main dealer.

If anyone has any recommendations in and around the Bucks area, I'm all ears For a potential "saving" of approx 180, I am not limited to just very local places.

Spennie,

Two places come to mind ....

AlfaAid in Maidenhead, but they charge similar labour prices to Alfa dealers.

L&M in High Wycombe ... about 1/3 cheaper on labour. They use EB for parts sometimes too.

Spennie,

Their number is 01494 538899 ..... tell them Gary recommended you. They've worked on my 156 a few times now ... including timing belt etc. But as it was included in some other work, not sure now what that cost on its own.

good luck

Re: Cambelt replacement cost

I looked at quote that I've had from L&M previously for some other work, it seems they charge 45 p/h + VAT and AlfaAid charge 48 p/h + VAT - so perhaps AlfaAid think it will take them longer to fit the parts?! We shall see, will give L&M a buzz.

Re: Cambelt replacement cost

Main Dealer rates will be well over 48 in SE England (close to double that in places...).

Re: Cambelt replacement cost

Cheapest place i found when looking into it were DTR Sportcars in West London

http://www.dtrsports.com/

They quote 239 pounds for cambelt + tensioner including labour and VAT

I'm not reconmending them though as i've not used them or heard of anyone else thats used them. But their webpage suggests they are specialists and seem pretty knowledgeable in the few emails i've had with them.

I'd be interested in how you get on with L&M if you use them - they aren't too far from me either.

Re: Cambelt replacement cost

Good call! Just phoned DTR and they confirm 239 for cambelt & tensioner inc labour and VAT. Variator is roughly 100 on top of that, prob a bit less I suspect. Don't think I will call L&M as I know they won't be able to beat that (based on previous quotes I have had).

Thank you everyone - will let you know how it goes with DTR (2 week wait mind).

With the 2.0TS & JTS you should also change the balance shaft belt & tensioner too.

Re: Cambelt replacement cost

Yes, thanks for that reminder David. Called DTR and booked in for next week now. All the above incl variator will come in around the 380 mark. Will follow up this post after the work has been done.

Thanks everyone

Re: Cambelt replacement cost

Well, had the work carried out by DTR today - all went ahead ok, total cost 385 (this was incl. variator). Can't say fairer than that really?!
