Alfa 156 TS 1.8L rattling/tapping sound near the oil cap. video link included.

Dear All,

I'm new to cars and Alfas but I love my 156.
It's done 98,000 Miles only 2000 of which have been with me.
When I got it, it was making the diesel rattle associated with a faulty variator and and I was going to get round to changing it after getting some cash together.

But now it makes this bloody rattling sound. Please check my link and if you have any idea, please let me know.

My own theory is that the one of the cams is knocking against the sleeve or a tuppet is stuck.
When I drive it the rattle goes up with the revs so I have to limp it around in 5th gear at 20MPH if I ever move it.

Doesn't sound good... Could be the variator, I guess, but I'd whip off the cam cover and see if there's a buggered tappet.

After that, you probably need to take the sump off and have a look at the bearings...doesn't sound like the big ends, but hard to say...

Thanks. Sound is definitely coming from the top side. How would I know if a tappet's buggered?

You'd be able to see it if it's that which is making the noise...either worn through, or sitting lower than the others (or more squashy if you poke it).

You need to do a compression check, i'm guessing bottom end has gone and has slightly bent a few valves on cylinder 1 or 2... Sounds like this are rarely simple fixes... Its quite a deep sounding knock to me sounds like the piston is hitting the head, i wouldn't be starting this to often...

Sounds like a duff variator to me, maybe change oil and filter to fully synthetic 5w/ 40 (Millers is reasonable price) and add some Forte top end treatment to new oil, see if the sound improves after a few days..

Dear All,

Thanks a lot for your advice. I'm going to do a simple check to see if it's the tappets or not. If not I have to take it to a garage (dont fancy getting under it to take out the sump without a proper ramp).

Sounds like big ends to me Have a listen to my old engine, it sounds similar although not the same. Mine sounded like it was coming from the top end too

All up and a possible crank regrind too as your shell damage sounds more advanced, I'd look at at a re con or replacement engine unless your going to rebuild it all yourself .

Verdict from the Garage = new engine or new car...

I'm looking at both options now.

Bit gutted but suppose I knew it was terminal myself.
Thanks for your help everyone!
