Turn engine by hand

The engine (V6) is in the car with the cam covers off. I'd like to inspect all faces of the cams so I was thinking about turning the engine over by hand, but I'm not sure how to.

If I take the spark plugs out can I just turn one of the camshafts by rotating one of the cam pulleys, or will I knacker things up?

Jaaaaag

I wouldn't turn it using the camshaft.

Either put it in gear and rock it forwards, or jack one front wheel up and turn it forwards.

Or get the big (34mm? - can't rememeber) socket required to remove the crank pulley and use that.

Or just take the plugs out and turn it over by hand using the 41mm crank pulley nut.

If you have the nearside wheel on the ground, stick it in top gear and turn the brake disc.

If the near side wheel is off the ground you will need to get someone to hold it, otherwise it will spin.

Thanks guys but all four wheels are on the ground and the largest socket I have is about 26mm. I managed to get enough cam movement by rocking the car in third gear.
