Mooney Diesel v Petrol

Hi,

Had a Sud veloce sprint twin spark and an Alfetta 1.8. Just bought an 07 159 Jtdm 16v and frankly think i should have gone for a 2.2 petrol. Dont do many miles and am thinking of trading in for either a JTS or 3.2.
A remap and dpf removal is also an option. In short i have made a b*llls up i think. If i went for a 156 which engine is the most reliable or is it save up for a TBI

Rambling I know, sorry

Alfa 156 2.4 JTD

2.4 20v JTD would have been better for motorway crunching

But low mileage wont see the benefits of diesel engined Alfas

Brera 2.2 JTS

I've no experience of the 159 but having had a 2.4 diesel Brera I would happily go for that again over the petrol model. The economy was a bonus but after a remap the performance was so much more for not much money.

Give the remap a go before you decide to change cars.

If you don't do many miles then indulge yourself and get the 3.2 V6

If you get the 2.2 you may wish you had got the 3.2 and end up changing again

i doubt the 2.2 will be or feel faster than the jtd you got. definitely won't after a remap...

Alfa GT 3.2

The whole Diesel vs Petrol debate is one that is really boils down to personal taste & driving style.
For me, I'd never have a diesel Alfa. It's not that I don't like diesels, they have their place; my VW is a diesel & gets used for long distance visits to customers & taking crap to the tip on Sundays.

The Alfa, on the other hand, is for when I want to have fun & for me that rules out having a deisel one.

Petrol & a V6 petrol at that. Get the 3.2, sod the fuel thirst & have a grin from ear to ear!

PS. 156 GTA is even better. Glorious sound from that Busso V6!

If you're worried about fuel economy, get a Diesel.

If you are seeing pump prices go up and thinking "Errmm", get a Diesel.

If you do more than about 250 miles a week, get a Diesel.

But, I've been running a 159 3.2 V6 Q4 for the last 6 months...

...and they've been the best 6 months driving I've ever had. Change of circumstances (Armed Forces redundee) force me to say goodbye to my black beauty 159.

Get in one, and put your foot down on a straight road. You wont be disappointed.

totally agree... if 156 - any v6 model is the go... the alfa arese sourced v6 is reliable and very very sweet sounding and performing engine..

if 159 u do not want the jts... average engine and really the 159 is too big and too heavy to have much fun with the 2.2...

Agree with all the above, but have you seen the price of diesel recently?, i always fill up at Shell and the Diesel
is 7pence a ltr more expensive than the unleaded...something to think about..

A barrel of crude oil contains less than half the amount of diesel than it does petrol, so as Diesel demand increases that price gap will widen further.

V6's in Alfa's = The Busso & the Brera equivalent are both brilliant engines.

My old 2.2 159 Ti was also a stonking unit that revved & revved. Not good at town speeds so needed a tweak.

Diesels just don't do it for me & the newer Alfa units are just too troublesome due to the things they fit to clean them up.

156 JTD 2.4 20V

The Alfa V6 is a lovely engine but then so is the 2.4 20V. I used to swear that I would never have a diesel but have been increasingly convinced over the years. The 20V is pretty economical (at least in the 156) and goes like stink. It loves revs like a petrol engine and even sounds nice (OK, not as nice as a V6). If both cars cost the same to run I would go for a V6 but I have 3 expensive kids............
