V6 cam belt

I've seen a 1998 GTV V6 for sale with 49k miles. Its still on the original cam belt, do you think I should get it changed? I've seen discussions for prices on the 4cyl engine, but what kind of price can I expect for the V6. I'd probably go to a specialist such as Alfa Aid or Black & White in Berkshire, rather than a main dealer.

Cheers.

Thumbs Up Re: V6 cam belt

My 155 wants a new belt at 72k but I always bottle out and change it at 60k.

The V6 cambelt is generally more robust than the TS jobbie (it's not so tightly routed, which must help) but it's never a bad idea to change it.

Your boy is 6 years old now and up for the 48k service - good time to do it.

At that age/mileage it should be changed. 500-600

Re: V6 cam belt

I went to see the car and it was pretty nice but talking to the owner revealed that he didn't have the master key!

I went into the Alfa dealer in Reading and found that you can't get a replacement master key, you have to change all the locks, immobiliser and ECU. Total cost 700. I also asked about the 48k service and timing belt and got quoted 400 for each. That's a total of 1500!

I'm going to try and negotiate a discount on the work. I'm having the GTV AA inspected and if its OK I will soon be a proud Alfa owner.

Good grief..where do you go for servicing!!!

I had all the belts done on my 155 V6 and water pump and tensioner for about 300! It's a 3-4 hour job for all of them, cambelt is perhaps 150 at a guess but you have to remove other belts to get at it which will probably need changing anyway and then the tensioner, about 60 (mine went on the way to the garage!!!).

Get the water pump done too.

Re: V6 cam belt

The garage I use charge 30 per hr + VAT for labour, and are usually pretty quick. Including the water pump they quoted me 480 last week for a 3.0 V6 (I added a bit to allow for most other garages having a higher labour rate).

For comparision purposes, the same garage did cam and balancer belts, both tensioners & the water pump on my 2.0TS for 390.

Maybe there is more space in a 155 engine bay - hence a quicker job.

Re: V6 cam belt

Cam belt and service does seem rather expensive. Nothing major gets changed on a 48K service. At 60K you usual do the spark plugs which puts the price up. I had my belts changed, variator and a 48K service on a 2lt t-spark for around 400 quid - which at the time I thought was expensive.
