CF3 323.10 Piston Required (scrap ideal)

I am looking into machining some CF2 323.01 pistons from a 2.0ts that I have to the same compression height as the CF3 323.10 pistons.

I basically need to lower the cr and 323.10 pistons with the older thick cylinder head gasket does this.

I only need the piston to confirm some measurements that I have found on the net - a scrap piston would be ideal:

Piston CF2
Bore : 83.000 mm
Compression Height: 32.000 mm
Length: 56.000 mm
Recess Depth 1: 3.100 mm

Gasket CF2
Diameter: 83,9 mm
Gasket Design: Fibre Composite
Thickness: 1,65 mm

Piston CF3
Bore : 83 mm
Compression Height: 31,3 mm
Length: 51,3 mm
Recess Depth 1: 3,8 mm
Recess Diameter: 69 mm

Gasket CF3
Diameter: 84 mm
Gasket Design: Multilayer Steel (MLS)
Thickness: 0,49 mm

There only seems to be 0.7mm difference between the pistons and 1.16mm difference between the head gaskets if my info is correct.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but found this interesting. We have a CF2 engine here with steel gasket (which goes against your information??)

We are doing the head on the 2.0 TS engine at the moment, well repairing someone's balls up (cam belt without the locking tools) and belt jumped tooth etc. I have a donor head which appeared to have composite gasket on it.

Is there a reason why they went from steel to composite? extra heat from cats? I would have thought it would be other way around, steel being better for the exta heat. Which would agree with your information.

My question, are the heads the same CF2/3? I plan to replace with steel gasket.

A steel gasket will not fit a CF2 engine as there will be not enough clearance between valves and pistons(maybe that was the problem when first turned over after repair)
They didn't go from steel to composite but the other way round.
All heads are same.

The CF3 steel gasket is thinner than the CF2 gasket.
Going from the experience of others, using a CF3 gasket in a CF2 engine has resulted in valves hitting pistons...

Are you sure it is a CF2 engine?
I know Aus didn't get the CF3 TS 156, but it could be from a 147.

The CF2 & CF3 heads are the same.

Hi guys, thanks for the information. There are no manifold cats, its '01 156 TS, assuming this is a CF2 engine. I dont think the head has been off, and it has a steel gasket? I will have to check the history now to confirm.

Well the repair was supposed to be for the cam belt only, but like I said they had no tools and f-'d it right up. Unless the broken #4 exhaust valve is from a previously changed wrong head gasket, as you suggest....

Another problem with this engine is #1 spark plug hole filling with coolant, thats why I have the donor head, incase a crack somewhere, ever seen this? This was pre-cambelt change as well.

I'm glad I checked here, before going ahead. This car is a real POS and hate fixing other peoples f-ups.

Out of interest, what is the engine type number on the chassis plate?

But given the length of time it takes to get cars into and sold in Aus it is likely to be a pre Sept 2000 CF2 car anyway, which would have had a 32301 engine.

You can tell if the head originally came from a CF2 engine or a CF3 engine by looking for the prescence of the grub screw on the thermostat side of the head, at the back. The CF2's have a grub screw, on the CF3 the casting was never tapped. The purpose of the grub screw is to allow the installation of a coolant temp sender, but only the CF1 engines use these.

Thanks Dan, looks like CF2 heads then, someone has replaced with steel gasket.. hmm.

You dont happen to know if the torques are different for the two gaskets. I only have elearn for 147 and I think the 2.0TS in that was CF3 and states:

40Nm + 90˚ + 90˚ + 90 ˚

Also do the plastic water pumps on these give issues like the V6?

Very rarely the TS waterpumps give impellor problems..
