The JTD is coming up for 36k and inline with current thinking its cambelt time. Has anyone done a belt on the JTD? Any tips?

If it`s anything like the cambelt on a BRAVA/DOBLO diesel then there easy enough to do....................pretty straight forward

Re: JTD cambelt

in the owners manual as far as I remember it has to be replaced on 120 000kms...but I will do that on 50 000kms....prefer to keep everything on the safe side which reminds me that I have to change my oil...bella just turned 20 000km...that will be her second oil change...first one 12 000km....but from now on it will be every 8 000kms.

My 2.4 JTD is ready for the 48K service, I enquired about the cambelt change at this service. The Alfa dealer said he had never heard of a JTD with a cambelt failure, only the Twin spark petrol had the problem. He advised me to leave it until the 72K service.
Has anyone else heard of a the diesel engine cambelt snapping before the 72K service?

Re: JTD cambelt

The main thing I have heard of is the "fanbelt" (auxiliary drivebelt) causing problems. It can delaminate and then strands can snake their way back round the pulleys, into the cam cover and throw the cambelt. I was advised to have it changed every two years.

Haven't heard of any cambelt problems - touchwood. I suspect it's a pig to do - just as it is on the 5 pot Fiat Coupes which share the same basic block. There's just not a lot of room in that engine bay!!

Re: JTD cambelt

My local Alfa specialist changed the cambelt on my JTD at 30,000 at my request. I got them to do the 76,000 mile service for the princely sum of, oooooh, about 315 IIRC.

It's in for another service on Saturday, I'll ask about the aux. belt then.

Personally I would rather pay an extra 150 every year in servicing than risk have an assortment of cam lobes, exhaust valves, timing gear teeth and injector parts leap though my bonnet whilst my siezed engine locks the front wheels and sends me and my car into the hedge, to be joined by the next three cars to skid on the oil I've just dumped on the road.

Can't think why that's my choice, but there you go.
