Help Major service + cam belt - prices + advice?

My GTV is coming up for a major service at 53k miles and also will need the
cambelt and varinator done (sounds like a london taxi when it starts !). I was also wondering if its worth getting the plugs replaced now too?

Can anyone advise on the the kind of prices i'd expect for this work (i'll be sitting down and has anyone got any advice on a good indepentent specialist in Bucks, Oxfordshire, or North or West London?

I've used Black and White in Newbury in the past and have been fairly happy - better than the official dealer at least - but they are pretty expensive. Are DTR in Mortlake W London any good? - anyone good any opinions here??

thanks in advance

Re: Major service + cam belt - prices + advice?

If anyone's interested i've got prices from DTR in Mortlake and they seem pretty reasonable at:

Cambelt and tensioner bearing fitted including parts, labour and VAT 239 (+ 120 for variator)

Major service inclusive 269 -

+ 60 for set of secondary platinum plugs

They say they use Texaco Havoline X1 oil - not selena. Not sure if this is any good or not? anyone know?

Also it would be nice to hear from someone who's used them before i go for it and part with my hard earned cash. The last so called specialist i used didn't even tighten the oil filter after replacing resulting in a big leak everywhere... so i'm a bit cautious now...

cheers

p.s anyone actually still got a GTV or Spider here??? everyone seems to be selling up ....

Checkout the Spider/GTV buyers guide by Spiderman. An excellent guide for buyers and owners. Plenty of prices for you to compare with.

If everyone's selling, who's buying ???

Had my belts/variator etc all replaced last month (Derbys)
Cam belt 19
Tensioner 101
Balancershaft belt 15
Balancershaft belt tensioner 37
Alternator Belt 17
Camshaft variator 81
Labour was 125

Looking forward to getting the suspension sorted next week, and having some serious fun!

Cheers

Hi Ive

I'm still here with my GTV although, thankfully, I don't have much to report at the moment!

I've just had the cambelt changed at the same time as a warranty variator replacement, so I've no idea about cost I'm afraid. All my other routine servicing costs are included in the buyers guide already.

Re the Oil.
Well I always take the oil I wish to be put in my cars engine to the dealer when I take it in for service.
That way I know what is in the engine

It was covered under the 3 year manufacturer/dealer warranty. There was no problem with approval at all.

It was all about a month before the warranty expired too, and I don't think I've ever been so pleased about something going wrong before...

Never known any Alfa specialist to reccomend anything other than Selenia.
Not heard anything about Halvoline. Can only assume DTR get a good deal on it.

Well Texaco Havoline X1 is a 10W40 synthetic.
I would use a 10W60 synthetic as recommended by Alfa for sporty driving.
Most people drive an Alfa in a Sporty manner. Those that dont should be taken out and shot............ Just kidding........... I think
