Help 146 Timing belt

Have just been quoted 600 euro (about 400 sterling) for replacement of the timing belt in my '99 146 1.4 by a garage here in Dublin. Is this a ridiculous price or about right? Also is it something that could be tackled by myself over a weekend as I've seen belts for sale for around 30.00. All advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello John and welcome...

The price sounds maybe slightly high, you could try getting a quote from the independent Alfa specialists in Dublin, T.I. Auto's.
I saw variator, belt and other related components replaced on my 1.8ts in the past for approx 500.
I'll double-check that...

John,

I had a look at a bill the last owner had for the belts and variator. It came to 500 including parts and labour. That's with TI Autos.

Re: 146 Timing belt

Just had some quotes at approx 450 inc variator change ex vat, you would also need to replace the fixed and sprung tesioners as well as the belt and if its a 2 ltr then the balance belt and tensioner might need doing too, for some reason one garage said they would need to replace the oil and filter when doing a cam belt/variator change, didnt bother to ask why as its as far as I can see totally unessasary.
Oh and the cost of cam belt and 2 tensioners came to 145.00 inc vat from a dealer but you can probably save a bit at online Alfa spares sites.

Go with it. Their attention to details is fantastic. They do an emissions test afterwards I believe.
