Help 2.0 156 Cambelt Change

I have a 2001, 2 litre 156 Veloce (Best car that I have ever owned) with 57k motorway miles on the clock. My service book recommends that I have the cambelt changed at 72k miles however my main dealer is saying that this should be done now.

Is this correct and is the 800 quoted by the main dealer an accurate fee??

Also other than the Alfa main dealer can anyone recommed a 156 specialist in or around the Bristol area.?

Welcome to AO!

It is advisable to change the belt after 3 years, or 36,000 miles.
You will be looking at less than half that price if you have it done at an independant.
I'm sure people on here have mentioned specialists in the Bristol area before, but it's not my neck of the woods.
You need to change the cambelt, the balancer belt, and both tensioners. Many people also change the variator too, as it is a know weak point, and you would have to strip the engine down to the same extent if it failed later.
I am just wondering if your dealer has included the 60,000 mile service in that price. It is a biggy with all 8 plugs being changed as well....

Re: 2.0 156 Cambelt Change

I have the same engine in my 1999 2.0 GTV, and Alfa are recommending changing at 36k now. I had mine done recently (last year at about 50k, plus the variator...and it all came in at about 500ish).

Steve Bateman did the work (italian car specialist on Central Trading Estate near HTV studios), it is not the poshest of garages, but he knows what he is talking about and does good work for reasonable money, and has looked after my GTV for a couple of years.

It is very wise to get it done, I had the cambelt snap on a Peugeot 406...and it cost me 1000 to get it sorted!

Hello All
I had the cambelt done with my 60k service at AMC in chelmsford and the total bill came to about 690 quid. Having seen the state of the belt I am very glad it was done then. Also am I the only person who was dissapointed with the GT once I had seen "it in the flesh"

Re: 2.0 156 Cambelt Change

Hi John,

You couldn't have written this query at a better time - I had my 2001 2 litre 156 cam belt changed last week, as part of the 60,000 mile service. I didn't want to wait any longer for this to be changed given some of the horror stories on this site. I come from Bristol, but work in Cardiff, and usually have my work done at the Cardiff dealer. HOWEVER, I was getting increasingly frustrated with them, so tried out LC MOTORS in Newport for a change, and they were excellent.

The whole service, including full cambelt/tensioner change, spark plug change, new rear brake pads (to stop embarrassing squealing), fixed airbag warning light, came to 833. I think the cambelt bit on its own was in the region of 430. I'd recommend them wholeheartedly, even if it costs you 4.60 to get over the bridge! You even get a courtesy car!
