2.0 JTS trouble starting

I have a 2.0 JTS GT, she is having trouble starting (slight crank!..a sort of "cough"), some days she will start first time, other days after two attempts and off days after 8 or 9 attempts.
I have changed the starter motor and replaced the battery without solving the problem.
Could it be a relay or fuse???? Any help could be hugely appreciated.

When I turn the key all status lights are AOK and the computer says OK, I turn the key and the starter just "coughs", almost like a thud! This can happen a couple or so times then will start perfectly normally without any excessive cranking (one turn of the engine and she comes alive).

I have a similar problem, but very intermittantly. I was told it was the starter motor and so that's been replaced, but still getting trouble. I'm beginning to think mine may be the immobiliser - so I'll get them to look when it's been serviced. Definitely worse on damp mornings though!

That makes me feel loads better, I thought I was the only one! I was talking over a beer last night with a few petrolheads and they thought keys (recoding) but your thoughts about the immobiliser could also offer some hope.

nope, if the code light comes on then goes off then the immobilizer is fine... Check the voltage of the battery when the car is running needs to be 14.4volt check all grounds make sure they are tight, especially the ones on the gearbox and the one on the rear right hand-side of the head. failing that you need to get it on a computer to check for fault codes.

Thanks Biffa, I'll get the earth points checked out ASAP, I am sure I am getting 14.5v but, again, I will double check.
