MAF question

I'm sick of searching old posts to find the answer to what is likely an easy question.

My 2001 156 1.8ts is running as flat as a witches t*t and I want to know how to test the maf.

There are loads of posts saying test the maf but none telling me how to test and what to look for.

I tried disconnecting the maf today. Engine started and idled exactly as usual (smoothly). Had the same pick up and feel to drive.

Can someone please tell me what I'm looking for and what those results might indicate.

Money is tight so I can't just buy a new Maf and swap it without good reason.

Pretty much a disconnected (duff) MAF should let the engine pull correctly, but the idle would be rough
Sounds like your issue is elsewhere
