What makes an exhaust sound loud/throaty/nice?
Chavs that drive 1.1 Shatso's, Poorsa's and Pee-esta's just throw a universal backbox on and SOMETIMES get a nice tune out the back, but its obviously all show and no go.
1. Can just a backbox give you a nice exhaust note?
2. Does a backbox alone actually improve or ruin performance that much?
3. What makes an exhaust loud or quiet? Is it the shape of the backbox? The interior of the backbox? The size of the tailpipe(s)?
I want a nice deep sporty growl from my 156 that isnt going to be annoying on the motorway, doesnt ruin my street cred
and doesnt hurt performance....
Firstly I changed the Back box on my JTS to a Ragazzon (oval exit), It did make things a little louder, not much, but a much sportier sound, no real noticable perfomance decrease / increase.
I then added a straight though centre section (Ragazzon again), much louder, very nice sound (imho), but did have a booming sound between 2-3k revs. I did notice a slight increase in performance from this, nothing major.
Finally got the job done properly, went to [email protected]
and he fitted a modified manifold from a twinny, getting rid of the first cat(s), down section from a race rebuild he was doing, into a 200 cell cat (only cat in the system), straight though centre section and Ragazzon back box(only silencer in the system). This sounds pretty epic and has made quiet a improvment at the top end of the rev range. very much on the loud side of things, but a nice noise.
