Noisy 156 1.8TS

For the past few months I've been living with the standard variator diesel like rattle on start up, but the cam belt is due soon so I've put it off. However over the last few weeks the rattle has continued after initial startup, and also the car has seemed to lost a bit of power. So today I decided to remove the can cover to find that the lobes on No 4 cylinder have nearly worn completely on the exhaust cam, and they are quite worn on the inlet cam but not as severe.
Here is a picture of the exhaust cam!

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this could happen?

Poor oil, lack of oil, or some kind of abrasive contaminant in the oil.

You'll need to replace the tappet when you change the cam if it looks like it's been getting worn down as well.

Does anyone know where I could pick up an engine?

It is quite common for the big end to give up after cam lobes wear as the metal particles end up in the oil and then the bearings..

My opinion is that some cams come with substandard case hardening, plus Alfa specify a 10w-60 oil on some engines, and IMO running on that can also be a contributing factor due to reduced oil circulation.

Most common to wear is the inlet cam above cylinder number 1.

Quick update, I've managed to find a good engine as I've heard it running and only done 49000 miles!!!
Started to take my engine out but the bloody weather has stopped play for today! :-(
