v6 flattened exhaust downpipe

Hi folks,

This might be a daft question but here goes.. The bottom of the downpipe on my 156 v6 is well flattened where it passes near the sump at the bottom of the car. I'm wondering do they come like this from new.. or is this the result of speed bumps being taken too quickly??

cheers
Gav.

The 164 certainly suffers from this design feature as well. Viewed from the front, from below bumper height, it's obvious the exhaust is the lowest point. Oh well, something had to be...

ya, i'm worried it might be resticting flow in the exhaust so was thinking of getting a new set of downpipes.. but if the new ones are flat too there's no point!

New ones shouldn't be flat. I apologise if you misunderstood. My "design feature" comment was meant tongue-in-cheek...

However, if they're like the ones on the 164, they are double-skinned (tube within a tube, if you see what I mean) so a bit of flattening probably hasn't affected the internal pipe.

I see what you mean! I'm not talking about a "bit" of flattening though.. there really quite a lot.. there's a flat part about 1 inch across all the way along the bottom of the pipe

Sound more like it's been in contact with something harder .... I'm sure they are supposed to be round. The TS has an alloy plate between the sump and the gearbox which protects that area.

Unfortunately it that hits the ground really hard it takes out the sump!

I ordered a new set of pipes anyway.. apparently the new ones are round according to the seller, but will see for sure in a day or two..

UPDATE: Yep, new ones from Alfa are round. No flat section at all..

Genuine Alfa, with the red/white Alfa sticker.. They're on the car now but I'll try and take a pic later!
