Squealing noise on startup

Howdy

My GT 1.9jtdm has a high pitched squealing noise on startup, blip the throttle and it will squeal, tick over and it wont. I thought it might be the Altenator or the aux belt, but its neither as the squeal is still present when you run the engine without the aux belt. One garage has said it "might" be the turbo and another has sait that it "might" be a leaking injector seal.

The noise will only last about 20 to 30 seconds and then its gone.

any ideas greatly appreciated

Liam

I had this on a different engine - turned out to be a cambelt tensioner... it progressively got worse, so when it did not stop on blipping the throttle, or after a short while from starting (& when smoke started coming from the cam cover ) I got it looked at! was a V6 Omega and I was lucky as the OUTSIDE or the cambelt was a tad frayed and shinier than kojaks head!!!!!!!!

Just have a sniff around tha cambelt cover after the noise stop and see if it smells at all!

How many miles on the car? Could be the waterpump beginning to seize...

Hmmm...

I've done a bit of digging ito the cars history this morning, I rang the main dealers who have looked after it since new, My managing director was the first owner, the timimg belt was changed at 62k miles and the waterpump was NOT changed, the car is now on 115k miles, so I've just been on to Alternative Autos and ordered a cambelt kit and waterpump for it!!

Are you sure its not your wallet making the noise? My wallet even starts breaking out into a cold sweat and hyperventilating each time i buy an Alfa.

I'm surprised (especially at iainfm ) that no-one has mentioned the aux-belt tensioner ... as that is the most likely cause ...

Tried that first, the squeal is just as bad when you run it without the aux belt
