JTD 16V thermostat question

Pretty straightforward question. Is the thermostat on the 16v JTD prone to stick like the petrol ones. reason I ask is while I get up to 70 pretty quickly, it seems to take an eternity in this cold weather to get up to full operating temperature - at least 10 miles or half an hour. I know all diesels take longer to warm up, however is tis normal in these cold conditions. All seemed OK on the test drive as I checked for it. Also I don't exceed 2K revs in the warm up period with this car so presumably that doesn't help either

Mine does exactly the same, it climbs up to 70C and then there is almost no way to get it any higher if I drive on B roads. On motorway it heats up to 90C and stays there, but in city or "slow" (~80km/h) traffic there is no way to get it up to 90C in reasonable time.

I was wondering if there could be a problem with engine oil cooler, which also has a thermostat, right?

JTD stats are prone to failure as much as the petrol ones are. I had to change mine. Not sure yours has failed though as it does get up to temp, as you say, diesels do take longer than petrols and it is bloody cold at the moment.

My v6 petrol donkey has an oil cooler and that doesn't affect the coolant temp' at all, except when it's very hot (which pushes the coolant temp' up). When the oil is cold, it's just cold on its own.. the coolant heats up to 86C regardless.

You could put a woolly hat over the oil cooler.. If it doesn't have a 'stat then that could cool the coolant down.

Right -was panicking somewhat. Up to 90 no bother yesterday within 5 mins of being on the motorway and same today. So Alfa paranoia is well and truly ingrained now it would seem . . . . .
