Does a variator in a ts have to rattle to be defective

I have got a 2.0 ts cf3 engine, when the car starts there is no rattle from the variator, the car has done 77k and a cambelt been done
but no recept of the variator being done,

But the car under 2500 makes a varator related noise which stops over 2500rpm

Thanks

The variator sound is Diesel sounding, not easily confused with other sounds, from what i understand from what you say i don't believe its variator rather something else.

It sounds like it has gone past the stage of rattling only on startup and is now rattling all the time.

Yes symon this is what I am thinking it just rattles untill it goes over the 2500rpm mark then sounds fine, I may have thort it was the solenoid, but if it's working over 2500rpm I think that means it working?

Thanks

It might be that it is not holding oil pressure very well due to its seal leaking.

The one on my first 146Ti gave exactly the same symtoms as you have when it went. It wasn't a loud rattle, well not as loud as you get from some variators on startup.

Have you got a nice even power delivery or does the car suddenly pick up at around 5,000 rpm or so?

no its fairly even, but as you say its like a slight rattle, not quite as loud as a normal start up rattle but its just there all the time, bit it does go about 2500rpm then instanly comes back after u have gone back below,

When is the cambelt due next?

I am fairly certain the variator does need changing.

I am sure it will be ok for 10k, at least it hasn't been done recently otherwise you would have to wait for longer.
