Head Skim

So you take your stripped head to an engineering shop to have the head skimmed. How do they know how much they can take off? I realise they will take as little as possible, but how do they know what is too much?

I have the spec for my 2.0 Twinnie, minimum depth of the combustion chamber in the head is 13 +- 0.2mm, and I will give him that info but what would he do if I didn't have that info?

Most heads i've seen have a mark on them to indicate the maximum that it can go down to.

I'd imagine your cylinder head would have one somewhere?

0.2mm is 80thou .....

they will only skim off as much as required & there is a min level too as Hgtbill said

I cant find the min level indication, where is it?

I'm not worried as I have the spec and having measured, I have alot to play with, but what if had been skimmed several times already? (unlikely I know but possible)

Thanks for the offer Chris but I should be ok now mate. The head has been repaired and only cost me 20!! The chap who does these repairs was recommended to me, so I turn up at his workshop to find out he was a mate of mine from 20 years ago!! Couldn't believe it. Turns out he is one of the best Alloy welders in the country. Specialises in custom bike frames to order. Had a right good catch up and he did the repair for me cheap. Will pick it up Thursday and take it back for a skim. Will post pics on the project thread in the image lounge when I get it. Thanks again Chris.

Garage
Just stripped off the heads of my 2.5, and wonder if there is any mark on it, indicating how much of it can be skimmed??
I plan to shave as little as possible, but using the fact that head's out, it will be good idea to know how much i can afford in future.
Any marks or place to measure?????
Thanks.
