Help!!!! 156 won't start

Hey guys

Please be patient as I know next to nothing about mechanics...but i'll try my best.

My 156 has not been driven in a few weeks, and no surprises, the battery was flat and the car wouldn't start.

So i've replaced the battery this morning, and now the electrics are all working (lights, alarm, radio)...but the car won't start at all. It just clicks but does nothing else. There are no warning lights on the display ie security key etc.

I'm now completely confused and very close to calling RAC, but thought I'd give a shout out to the forum first.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks

David

Get under the car... Safely! .... Axle stands etc. Tap lightly on the starter motor (behind the engine on the gearbox side, looking from the top its below all the inlet manifold and attached to the gearbox... If you can't get to it with a small hammer, try tapping with a long screwdriver and hammer. Don't go crazy, if it miraculously starts afterwards then the teeth on the starter motor may be chewed and worn... If not, then look at the solenoid (auto electrician will be able to help)!

double check that you connected the new battery properly i.e. the terminals (the wires to the battery) black = - , and red = +, all the best, maxio

Aye! Sometimes a not very charged battery will be able to run the radio and lights but the starter solenoid is heavy duty work. If you have a voltmeter you can measure the voltage.. it should be 12.6 volts. Even 11-point-something will be too feeble to crank the engine.

Charge the battery for 8 hours and then reconnect it and give it another go.

My vote goes for the battery not being 100%. The 156 needs 100% battery or it will not crank over and just click. You may even get a 12v reading from your battery but if there are not enough amps, it simply will not start.
