Stupid Service related questions

Since I'm browsing on my iPhone the search doesn't work fantastically and since it's not my car I'm not buying a haynes for it, (I already have a massive collection as it is!)

So what I'm asking is;
What's the full coolant capacity of the cooling system?
What's the metal composition of the head and block?
Is there a drain plug on the block?
Where is the bleed valve?
Is the thermostat a service item? What's the usual failure interval on these?

Finally any tips for bleeding it? Looks to me like it might be easier if I jack the coolant resevoir side up so it's higher than the rest of the system.

Re: Stupid Service related questions

Which car/engine?

Most newer Alfa's don't even have the luxury of a Haynes manual ...

If it's the 147/156 TSpark then it's:

1) 7 litres I think (you'll never get all the old coolant out anyway -- see point 3). I usually make up 5 litres of coolant mix (50/50 with distilled water) and that enough. Unless of course you are planning to strip the engine and managed to remove all the coolant.
2) Alloy head/cast iron block (no cylinder liners in TS, only V6)
3) No
4) None
5) It is changed as part of a service? No ... wear&tear. Varies: first one failed at 6 years, replacement after three.

And as for tips, the 156 reservoir is already the highest point. Just run engine with cap off for a few minutes and top up as the air is expelled.

cheers, Gary

Re: Stupid Service related questions

Doh! Yes sorry 2.0l tspark.

Sounds like alfa should have put a drain plug on the block! Seems silly to me you can't get it all out!!

Being alloy block and head I'll stick to vw coolant, thanks.

as above block is iron, head is aluminium hence why you need to skim the head when the H/G goes bang and not the block. Iron does not warp alloy does.
