166 3ltr V6, Whine from engine

Hey guys,

I've just bought a 2001 Alfa 166 3LTR V6. One of the issues it has is a very loud whine from the area around the throttle body and gearbox. Obviously the cambelt, tensioner and idler bearings are on the opposite side of the engine, so I'm a little lost as to what it could be. Any ideas what the noise could be coming from? The noise reduces as the engine warms up but can still be heard.

I collect the car on Saturday, I'll post a link to a video then.

Cheers

Steve

Could be s few things but guessing its clutch release bearing related without hearing it... as thats that end but could be a gearbox related whine..

does it go away when you depressed the clutch. is it constant or speed related etc.. need a little more info

Hey mate,

It's an auto. Could the torque converter make a similar noise? It does have a gearbox issue, i.e. no drive.

Yes could be an issue but i would guess its gearbox related rather than torque converter as i,m not sure they tend to fail.. there is a 166 section of this forum i would try there as they will jhave better knowledge of 166 specific issues...
