GTV TS cambelt and Variator

I have just bought my first Alfa, a '96 GTV TS.

The previous owner has told me that it will need a cambelt change and variator change within the next 5000 miles, i am fairly compitent with things mechanical so that doesn't phase me.

I have done a bit of reading about the variator, my question is: is there more than one type, when i order one do i need an engine or chassis number?

The cambelt, again other cars i have done in the past i have bought a kit that comprised of the rollers can the same thing be boiught for the GTV. again will i need an engine number for the cambelt?

finally would a water pump replacement be a good idea at the same time?

Loads of posts on this one. Cannot do any harm to give numbers when ordering. Water pump a good idea if you're doing the rest, not expensive and easy to do at the same time but a bugger if having done the others it then fails!

This will give you an idea:-

Re: GTV TS cambelt and Variator

You'll need to invest in some tools first, so it's prob only worth DIYing if you're going to keep the car for more than 36,000 miles.

Alfaworkshop do a brief Alfa TS cam belt change guide and sell the parts and tools in their Alfa Romeo Parts store.

Phone up any of the above suppliers and you should get good advice on what you need.
