Cry Like A Baby GTA Cambelt snapped @ 46000!

My cambelt has just snapped on the Motorway during rush hour, not much fun!

53 plate, 46000 miles fully serviced. So much for the recommended replacement intervals.

Due to the traffic I was doing about 50 mph, does anyone know what the likely damage will be/cost?

Bad luck mate. Although Alfa say five years, I go with four myself, which would make yours due.

Depends entirely on damage, but cost for our cloverleaf was around £2500.

Bad luck mate. Sorry to hear that but if I were you and the car has a full Alfa Romeo service history then I'd be pursuing Alfa for most, if not all, of the repair costs.

Re: GTA Cambelt snapped @ 46000!

Bad luck.
Even when they fail at idle or when just turning on the starter you can expect many bent valves.
At 50mph you can probably expect 24 bent valves needing new valve guides too. Possible cyl head & piston damage.

It won't look pretty in there

Some countries recommend changing the V6 @ 60000km/36000miles/3-years too.

The cost will be the best part of £1500. You would do well to ring Alfa and ask for a contribution!

Re: GTA Cambelt snapped @ 46000!

I also have a GTA and my cambelt went at 60k. It took a lot of arguing, persistence and being a pain, but I suggested that as I had followed their service schedule, this was their fault not mine. Alfa eventually paid half. the bad news? Half was around £1500 as the totasl bill came to just under £3000. Ouch.

Good luck

Re: GTA Cambelt snapped @ 46000!

If you are feeling flush then maybe consider a 3.7 conversion..
The damage you have done to the valves wouldn't matter since they would be thrown away anyway.

There aren't many v6 cambelt failures so you are very unlucky I think.

Re: GTA Cambelt snapped @ 46000!

I've mine booked in for 4yr all belts, tensioners, water pump, all filters, all fluids, suspension check. Likely to be Eur 1500+ - and that is an independent! I've risked 5 years before - but not on an Alfa!

No consolation for you though... sorry! I think Alfa should cover a fair amount of the cost. Did you have it from new or second hand? Do you have any warranty?

Re: GTA Cambelt snapped @ 46000!

I am rebuilding one at the moment after the belt came off for one for a customer, he had there belts done late last year by one of our local franchise dealers. Auto data give 30 hours for a full strip down and rebuild, I think that is ambitious but that is how we will bill it. That is plus parts.

If the damage is really bad and Alfa UK won’t help out (which they should) I do have a good, low mileage GTA engine in stock.

Good luck, give Alfa UK hell

Re: GTA Cambelt snapped @ 46000!

How many of these are caused by the water pump seizing? I know the plastic impellor one on mine was looking sorry at 48k miles when I had mine changed

Thats a bit naughty if its under the recommended time scale and mileage with full service history i'd expect Alfa to be footing the full bill!

I agree 100%, but Alfa UK will fight it as hard as they can. Great customers service that

In my opinion it is worth showing your dealer this thread as it might help you cause, they don't want to look bad now do they.

Re: GTA Cambelt snapped @ 46000!

Hi Nick

My belt snapped at 63k 2 months out of warrenty I had to pay a contribution to Alfa of £150, I then logged a complaint saying I had main dealer history and it should of not snapped they sent me thru £200 woth of vouchers towards my next service.

so push it with the dealer and then log a complaint to Alfa directly.

all the best

The water pump is driven off the auxillliary belt, not the cambelt.

Correct, and the failed V6 pumps seam to just spin on the shaft rather than seizing anyway.

The JTD pumps do seam to seize and snap the cambelt though.

In an alternative universe perhaps...best scenario £2500 or recon engine £3500 if you are lucky. I don't know but I think the replacement time on these belts were reviewed and should be around 30,000. However that should have been picked up at the last service but who knows..In the words of Bishop the android...you have my sympathies...

This is the 2nd time I've posted a link to this thread so I offer my apologies but I think its relevant. Particularly given the recent problems I've had with it (failed tappet)

Re: GTA Cambelt snapped @ 46000!

Just had the belts done at 4 yrs /18k miles. Belts were fine, waterpump was fine (replaced with metal impeller type) but alternator tensioner was noisy. Gerry (TI Autos) also discovered that my car had the timing slightly off - from the factory! FFS Alfa!

A word of warning: there was a GTA in the workshop with a failed belt at 5 yrs/40k miles. And am told of another failure in a GTA at 40k miles. So replace the belts at 4 years!!!! They seem to be failing very regularly now.

I also saw several V6 plastic waterpumps. Mine seemed to be the only one that WASN'T cracked!

Re: GTA Cambelt snapped @ 46000!

Sorry to here about your trouble Nick. Hope you sort it soon. It has now prompted me to change my belts on my GTA. Other than the Cam Locks that I can hire from EB spares. Does anybody know if i need any other special "Alfa tools" to perform the task?
Thanks Phil

Re: GTA Cambelt snapped @ 46000!

Sorry to hear that - Best of luck

My 166 had rebuild following a snapped belt in March last year - Car was a few months shy of three years old but with 67,000 miles on the clock. Therefore technically out of warranty but Alfa stumped up for the lot under warranty claim.

I was not the owner then (only purchased earlier this month) but have just received a letter from Alfa confirming work done - 24v etc, etc, etc! I had a belt snap years ago on my 164 24v - All 24v knackered also!
