Re: Engine noisy on idle

Might sound like a silly question but have you serviced it/had it serviced lately?? sometimes an oil change can make a good difference!!

Re: Engine noisy on idle

hi thanks for the reply its been serviced recently, yes and the oil level is always checked. I used to have a 146 1.8 twin spark and the variator went on that after a service !!

Re: Engine noisy on idle

I'm new to the alfa world so don't know them inside out, always good to rule out the easy things first......what rpm does she idle at?? is the engine vibrating much in the bay (maybe slighly loose mounting) or

Re: Engine noisy on idle

she idles nicely and without movement the rpm is 750/800 rpm but the noise does remind me of what it sounded like when a variator had gone. I am new to all this to how are you finding it?

I've been brought up on Vauxhalls and I went against my instincts when I swapped my astra for a 156 (my first non-vauxhall and first diesel). I knew alfas had a bad rep for reliability but anybody I'd ever heard that from didn't own one, so what would they know!! I thought I'd make my own mind up.

I've had a few teathing problems, in fact since I bought the car in August it's been running perfectly for a total of 7 days (5 of those it was off the road with no MOT) but the memory of those 7 days keeps me motivated!! I've spent about 600 so far on needed parts(MAF, new sump, rocker gasket and a DAMN GOOD SERVICE), about 350 on brakes (Brembo sports discs EBC pads and Goodrich braided hoses) and now it looks like I need to change 1 or 2 hoses (hopefully that's the case anyway). Anymore problems and I think I'll go back to Vauxhalls again but if this/these hose(s) fix it, I think I'll be in love.

Brilliant handling car, lovely gearbox, fantastic looking dash (esp at night) and an absolutely gorgeous to look at...I just need more power, but I'll hang in there for a while yet.....what about you??

Re: Engine noisy on idle

Almost certainly the variator. I had one go on one of my cars. it began just rattling at idle, and after a while it would rattle all of the time until the revs went over 1800rpm.
Once it gets to this stage it will affect performance and fuel economy as the rattle signifies that the internal oil seal has failed and the parts inside are moving when they shouldn't.

You will have to bite the bullet and get it changed, along with the cambelt and tensioners.

Re: Engine noisy on idle

mine has been the total reverse to yours its been very reliable apart from the noise on tick over.

I have bought mine from the company i work at for a second car and i love it to drive, there are not many modern cars with any character. This is my second alfa that i have personally owned and i just love them, they do need a bit more tlc than others but hey the upside is the cracking drive.

I hope that you get your problems sorted as the 2.4jtd is a lovely car. It sounds as though you are getting there and once sorted i am sure you will be very happy with it

Re: Engine noisy on idle

Thanks for the advice, i guess you are right it has done 30,000 since the belts were last changed so i will take the plunge and get it sorted while the belts are off. Mine started to rattle like a diesel after start up only for about 10 seconds but now its all the time. I will book it in and look forward to quite idling

thanks again
