Help 147 Cam belt

Hello
Extremely new member passing a bit of time at work, also not that PC literate so please accept apologies.
Question if some one can answer.
Bought a 147 1600 Lusso 2years ago Y plate 23k.
Was quite happy in the belief cam belt would need changing at 72k, found this site and realised different.
Car now done 40k , had the cam belt changed at 33k when new water pump fitted, but no new variator, what ever that is.Question is should i now change belt again including variator or should i leave it until existing belts time is up. Car runs perfectly but does sound like the worst deisel on start up.

Regards

Hi and welcome to AO From what I've read on here the variator usually gets changed at the same time. Check around and do a search, cheers

Re: 147 Cam belt

the variator isnt on the service schedule. many people change them at the second belt change in anticipation that it will fail before the 3rd belt change, that is a wise thing to do, but at your mileage there is nothing to wory about, leave it for the next belt change.

I've changed the variator on mine after 60kkms. Now I'll be changing it again at 120kkms. This happens when I also change cam belt and tensioners.

Re: 147 Cam belt

I just had my cambelt changed (literally a week ago actually) but I don't think the variator was changed. She's an 02 and has done 41k, so I should be ok shouldn't I?

Re: 147 Cam belt

The variator isn't a crucial think to the engine, I mean, it will work with a bad variator and it wont mess with anything else. BUT... it wont work as it should, you will have less power, less torque, worst petrol consumption.

Re: 147 Cam belt

Hmmm, interesting. My 147 does seem to be lacking a bit of power lately...

Cheers, I'll have it looked in to. Performance has been a bit "meh" recently, and it seems to be getting worse...

Re: 147 Cam belt

as said the variator won't blow the engine or anything but a failing one will result in reduced power. Worth noting that a failing variator will make the engine sound similar to a diesel on cold starts and the sound will last a few minutes if not longer. Don't worry to much about it but if you do notice a diesel like sound at startup lasting more than 30 seconds or so you may consider replacing it.

Re: 147 Cam belt

I had my cambelt changed a few months ago on my 147 2002 selespeed but not the variator. However i think this may need changing as it is noisy on startup, and there seems to be a lack of power and a bit jerky to begin with. How much are you looking at to get just the variator replaced as i dont need anthoer cambelt?

Re: 147 Cam belt

I always do the variator with belts, some cars eat them.

If you take the variator out, you need to change the belt, the labour is identical, so......

Re: 147 Cam belt

My first Cam belt change was done as part of the deal I did when I bought it 18 months ago with 48K miles on the clock.

We suspected that the Variator had not been changed because the work was done at a main Dealers and they were paying for the work, so even though there were no ill effects showing by the time I had the second change done last week at 84K miles, we opted to change the variator too rather than have to change the whole lot again before the next cycle.
