Engine Motor Control System Failure??

Hey guys,
Just got home from being out in my 147 today and whilst being on the road, the yellow warning light (engine symbol) came on with the warning "Motor Control System Failure". After looking this up in the owner's manual, I realised that this meant that there was a possible fault in the supply / ignition system which could cause high emissions at the exhaust, possible lack of performance, poor handling and high consumption levels.
Firstly I'd like to know how serious this problem means for the performance of the car and the risk involved in leaving it for a little while.
Secondly I'd like to know if this problem would be covered under warranty (I am currently covered with the AA). If not, how much would I be looking at spending to correct it?

Re: Engine Motor Control System Failure??

just had the same problem with my alfa 147, it was a misfire on cylinder 1, i also have the aa warranty, i had to pay for the diagnostics but the warranty paid for a new coil pack, all in all i paid about £100 for the diagnostics and new sparks. very happy with the warranty companys performance, i was expecting the worst!

Re: Engine Motor Control System Failure??

& would you say it's essential to get repaired straight away (i.e. not to use car until then) or is it unlikely the problem will worsen if I do drive it (albeit not particularly long journeys)...

Re: Engine Motor Control System Failure??

The light could relate to almost anything to do with the engine.

Impossible to say if it is safe to ignore for a while.

Re: Engine Motor Control System Failure??

Even though the fault specified directs to a description in the owner's manual stating that it's a problem with the supply / ignition system?

Re: Engine Motor Control System Failure??

yes, could be anything.

You need to get the car connected to a diag computer to find out what the problem actually is.

Re: Engine Motor Control System Failure??

I understand what you're saying but being that I need to use the car, any idea what the worst case scenario is?

Re: Engine Motor Control System Failure??

As far as cost goes the worst case could probably be massive overfuelling wrecking the Cats with a bill for around £1000.
Alternatively it could be running very lean which could lead to melted pistons etc and an even bigger bill...

Or or could just be something simple like the battery failing.

As I said, impossible to say.

Agree with david c, you really need to plug it to a diagnostic machine asap, this is the only way you going to find out.

i stopped driving the car but i could do without it for a while, as stated above get it in and have it checked, you could make things a lot worse.
