Engine high pitched whir/ squeak

Hi

Sometimes upon starting the car, more noticable in the cold, I can hear a constant high pitched whirring sound, some time it will go away after the 147 has warmed up sometime not.

Is it the water pump abuot to go, we have just reached the milestone of a six figure mileage (well only 13% of that is mine!)

More likely to be coming from the alternator. It'll be working harder just after starting until the battery is topped up again. Could be bearings or the aux belt.

Coooo, my car matches my posts!

a squealing aux belt on start up isnt uncommon on any car, especially if you park it outside so it gets damp. when was the aux belt last replaced?

Could be those cambelt associated gears, like what we had? If it disappears when warm, I wouldn't be too concerned, cos' the spinny' whirly' bits with bearings, don't like the cold and damp.:

Thanks both of you. I am unsure when the aux belt was replaced, I will arm myself with a can of WD40

No!

WD40 will make the blet slip good and proper.

If you do want to clean anything that a belt travel on then use IPA (iso-propyl alcohol) as this eveporates quickly.
