Read and reset engine error codes for 2004 147

I apologise in advance for this post because I know that there are already quite a few posts out there regarding clearing error codes but none seem to have the info I need.

I have a 2004 147 2L T-spark and the engine light has been on now for around a month. It comes immediately I start the engine. I canít afford to take it to a garage to find out why and so Iíve been looking at ways to find out for myself what the error code is.

Iíve looked on ebay and this site and Iím lost as to the type of connector I need and the software to go with it. I obviously want to do this as cheaply as possible so this is where I need your help.

Please can someone advise me as to what cable I need (I've heard about ODB2 and UBD2) Ė and if possible where I can get this from. Iíve heard mention of some software called alfadiag but is this free? and if not is there any free software available that can just read and reset error codes? Many thanks in anticipation.

all petrol cars sold in the EU after 2001 are EOBD compatible, that means any basic EOBD reader will be able to read and erase your fault code(s).

if you live in the north east of england i would be happy to do it for you (for free).

Thank you so much for your quick response and generous offer. As I live in Sheffield the NE is probably too far but I really appreciate your offer nevertheless. If I were to buy a EODB USB cable can you recommend any software to run on my laptop? Thanks again.

you dont need software or a cable if you buy a code reader such as this: A30 EOBD OBD2 CAN BUS Diagnostic Code Reader Scanner-UK on eBay, also, Diagnostic Tools Equipment, Garage Equipment Tools, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 24-Jan-08 21:00:00 GMT)

if you keep an eye on ebay you'll get one for less than £20.

alternatively you could buy a cable interface for your laptop and use some software such as uniscan, but you'll need to get a cracked version (torrent) unless you want to pay a license fee.

i have always used digimoto (Digimoto OBDII Vehicle Diagnostic Software) you can get the whole kit software hardware everything you need from them but it would be cheaper to take it to a local specialist not a main dealer. any decent car garage should be able to reset the code. make sure if it says somethings buggered that you get it sorted first tho!

also worth noting that any OBD2 kit should work fine with EOBD, its essentially the same thing, one being american, the other european

welcome to the site

Re: Read and reset engine error codes for 2004 147

We have a generic eobd reader. Whilst its effective in diagnosing some fault codes and erasing them, it will only read SOME codes.

0-999 codes are generic and can be read but anything 1000+ is manufacturer specific and cannot be diagnosed without specialist knowledge.

I anyone does have this ability I would be greatfull if you could tell be what 1388 and 1389 are on an 03 147 GTA....

I am using ELM 327 interface, like this one here:

ELM327 USB OBD2 CAN BUS EOBD Diagnostic Kit ELM 327 on eBay, also, Diagnostic Tools Equipment, Garage Equipment Tools, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 31-Jan-08 21:10:21 GMT)

I have Digimoto SW but if you are going to purchase one have a look on Proscan as well.
I used the interface on my 147 and many times on my firends 156 who had some lambda and misfire issues.

Re: Read and reset engine error codes for 2004 147

OK - I promised an update to help others and here it is... I bought an A30 as recommended by "jug" above and paid around £30 off ebay (see link above in jugs reply - although a quick google search will find other sites). When it arrived my heart sank because the end connector is D shaped and the UOBD socket in the car is rectangle.

...For info there are 2 screws supporting a panel under the steering wheel. taking these out the panal swings open and above the now visible fuse box (though it looks like part of the fuse box) is a rectangle socket with two rows of 8 holes for the male pins from the connector.

Anyway - I thought that it would not fit but it does, although it's tight and the first time you try you have to rock it a little so that it goes on enough. When it's connected the unit comes to life and you then click OK for it to start reading. About 10 seconds later it either shows - - - - which means that there are no error codes or it will show a 4 digit number. Pressing the up arrow will move through the codes if there is more than 1 error present. Write these down and then check them in the book which comes with the A30 unit. To clear the code from the car simply hit the EXIT button while reading a number. Be warned though that you may be clearing something that needs attention!! Hope that helps any other newbies like I was (and still am!).
