cambelt change

Thinks its about time for a cambelt and variator change for my 147 (66k). My first Alfa, only had it two months, and loving it.

Can anyone recommend someone to do the above work please?

I live in Cardiff, but will travel for a good recommendation.

Finally, roughly how much should this cost?

Thanks in advance

Re: cambelt change

Assuming you have TSpark engine (4 cylinder), you are well overdue .. ignore the handbook ,... it should be changed at 36000miles or every three years now ...

It will vary between £300 to £800 depending who does it. Don't know any one in Cardiff sorry. Couple of places near Bristol I've heard about though.

Re: cambelt change

I had mine done today, a 2.0 TS, at Jamie Porter's in Royston Cambs. They charge £300 inc VAT for belts and tensioners but he is great value.

It depends on what else may need changing, variator, gaskets, idlers.

Re: cambelt change

The cam belt has a tensioner AND an idler. The balance belt (2.0) just has a tensioner. These should all be replaced with the cam belt.

IMHO, despite its additional cost (£70) the variator should also be replaced.

Re: cambelt change

Hi Spikey.
I'm Cardiff based too and have been using ***** (yes, not Alfa) & Yapps Garages in Llanishen as they are alfa and fiat specialists.
Got the 48k service there soon after buying it and had the cam belt and tensioner changed. While it was there they found that the handbrake cables needed changing and rear brakes (pads and disks) needed doing. Eventually cost in the £700s. Not sure how much of that labour cost (approx £300) was servicing/other repairs/cam belt.
Bit disappointed this time around though as comments on 60k service recommends changing the variator (wondered why the diesel noise on start up...). Wish I'd known that changing the variator at the same time as the cam belt was a good idea.
Kind of hope that the variator lasts out until next year at least!
