My 3rd Engine ! - I need a Good Mechanic in Lancashire

Can some-one help, this is breaking my heart!

I bought a 2000 (V reg) 156 selespeed in 2003 with 30 odd miles on clock. A car of my dreams and it went like one too.

Couple of issues early on but I got them fixed. And on hearing the Cam belt should be changed I got some money together and got a garage to sort it along with a few other minor things. Great it now has a new lease of life.

2 weeks later - bang the cam broke, the daft ............ mechanic just changed the belt! - Arguments but no fists (although it was close) broke out. The so called mechanic installed another engine. It's never been the same - ticking and whirring.

Now it's gone again - don't think it's the Cam this time but the big end - so the RAC say. They also said Scrap it

At Christmas I spent £300 on new tyres and front exhaust - basically Iím now in for a penny in for a pound.

If you know anyone that can help find an engine or fix this one please help - I don't particularly want a mechanic - I need a miracle worker, preferably one who knows Alfa's

Ta

Not in Lancashire, but one of the best in the business, is Peak Alfa, in Hope, Derbyshire.

Accessible by train from Manchester Piccadilly, with the bonus of being in the Peak District - worth it for the drive there!

you could try Ferdis garage at Lytham 01253 738903 and for an engine, douglas valley breakers at Standish may be able to help 01257 472866 you don't say where you are in Lancashire as I may be able to help more if you post which town you are near (know of a few alfa main dealer guys who do foreigners at weekends) hope that helps but yes i would agree that if you can get to Peak Alfa they are probably the best in the North West area

Don't Autolusso do a good deal on TS engine swaps? Seem to recall it sounded like great value.

Edit: Just had a look here and they do an engine fitted for £1500, which sounds pretty good.

They're in Bedfordshire, but it might be worth it.

I hear nothing but good things about Ital Autos in Chesterfield, they can come and pick up your car for you on their low-loader for a very good price as well as fitting a recon engine, warranteed for £1150:

alfa 156,147,166,gtv,spider, 2.0 tspark recon engine on eBay, also, Alfa Romeo, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 29-Jan-08 16:46:27 GMT)

Or you could try doing it yourself:

Alfa 2.0 TS engine 145,146,gtv,147,156 on eBay, also, Alfa Romeo, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 23-Jan-08 18:45:57 GMT)

The only financially viable way of repairing it would be to do it yourself.

If you can't, then I'm afraid your other option is to flog it on ebay. It'll go for approximately £5-600.

Ta for your replys.

I'm in Bolton, will start phoning round now.

As for fitting - I'm no mechanic and haven't the tools, and I'm pritty sure it's not like building a Meccano car!

I wouldn't spend another bean on the thing. As Chris said, it'll make 500 quid on ebay - put that towards another 156. It would just be your luck to fit another engine and then the Selespeed bit goes **** up.

Re: My 3rd Engine ! - I need a Good Mechanic in Lancashire

scrapyard engine £100-200 with 28day warranty, fitting £100-150, job done car back on the road. all you need is a local garage that isnt full or retards, i know they seem difficult to find but they are out there. if you get the timing belt job done prior to fitting it will only add £100-150 to the cost so it would be daft not to, but the total cost is still reasonable. not quite enough to justify scrapping the car.

alternatively sell it to me and i'll fix it, a 2003 model will be a facelift so i'll give you £700 for it.

Re: My 3rd Engine ! - I need a Good Mechanic in Lancashire

a full rebuild on my engine (crank, shells, cam belts, adjusters, oil pump) by a very good alfa man (alfatecnico in sutton in ashfield) cost £1700 with a years guarantee (oh head skim aswell)

Don't know about that. I've never heard of anything as cheap as what you're saying for a replacement engine, plus the not knowing what condition it's in and what a head rebuild would cost, I thought it sounded good value. Maybe things really are cheaper up north.

The problem with that is if you source the engine yourself you are ultimately responsible for the additional cost of removal and return if it turns out to be a dud.

I think 100 - 150 for fitting is optomistic. I wouldn't do it for less than 300-400.

A timing belt kit will cost around 150 in bits and there is no way I would trust a back street garage to do it even if they arn't a bunch of muppets - chances are they won't have cam locks.

thats the risk you take to save a few hundred quid. i'm not a gambling man but sometimes you need to take a few risks in life.

Re: My 3rd Engine ! - I need a Good Mechanic in Lancashire

Its a difficult one this. I'd probably suggest Ital motors in chesterfield as they offer a good service with a warranty. Nothing comes for free, but what you are buying is peace of mind. They come and get, fix it and bring it back with a guarantee. Its difficult to put a price on that if its your regular transport, and their price is not a bad one by any means.

Also, if you decide to get rid, you at least have something to trade. If the overall condition of the car is good/above average, then i'd do it. If its a bit crumbly round the edges, then I probably wouldn't bother.

I don't envy your decision, but whatever you decide to do I hope it works out OK.

Re: My 3rd Engine ! - I need a Good Mechanic in Lancashire

We might have had this discussion over the phone this weekend - I had a few people asking for 2.0 156 engines...as usual

As others have said - its a close call - you could replace the car pretty much like for like (only working!) for say £1500 buying privately - maybe cheaper off the 'bay if you are adventurous. Rebuilding your engine, or fitting a second-hand one is likely to be not less than the £750 - £1k region - unless you have access to Jugs' £100 scrapyard engines - I've never seen one! On Ebay you should get £300 + especially as its a Sele.... So its tricky to call.

I've no 2.0 156 engines, but have a couple of 145 ones, that a proper mechanic can easily swap to 156 spec - the difference is only sensors, manifolds and the cam covers. I can supply one of those for £500 - delivered to Bolton. Unfortunately I just supply the parts, I don't have the facilities to get involved in fitting them.

Good luck!

Re: My 3rd Engine ! - I need a Good Mechanic in Lancashire

As an aside.....Tony Favarin near Oxford can fit the old 8v 155 1.8/2.0 engine and box into a 156. You'll buy a mechanically good 155 with no MOT for around £150-200 and no, the 164 is no good. The advantage of this is that you get a 156 with a bulletproof engine that requires no maintenance other than oil changes. No cambelt crap, no variator crap, no crank problems or blow ups. No red key bullsh*t.
Resale value? A V plate 156 Selespeed doesn't have a big resale value so it's not an issue. Tony has converted a couple of 16v 155's back to the old engine and it's a doddle - the 155 16v and 156 gearboxes are virtually identical. The 2.5 24v engine can also be replaced with a 164 12v V6.

Food for thought eh?

Re: My 3rd Engine ! - I need a Good Mechanic in Lancashire

I like that idea..a proper Alfa engine in a 156 Its will be quite a bit lighter as well as the 8 valve is all alloy unlike the 16valve Fiat jobby which has a cast iron block.

Putting a 164 24valve into a 156 gives you a real Q car..terrific!
