Cam belt on low mileage 147

My 147 2.0TS, which i've had from new (and has been 100% reliable), is coming up to its 4th birthday and has only done 13K, mainly town driving.
My dilemma is whether to change the cam belt - Alfa say 36K or 3 years. As the mileage is ridiculously low i'm wondering whether i'm being a bit premature but at the same time the car IS 4 years old.
How much does age as opposed to mileage affect the cam belt?

Re: Cam belt on low mileage 147

very low mileage is actually worse for the belt because it sits still for so long that it becomes brittle much sooner. on a TS engine you MUST obey the 3year/36k change interval.

Re: Cam belt on low mileage 147

100% back what jug has said. I've always been of the belief that it is not 'milage' per say that does the belt in, more like how the car has been driven. Lots of town driving is lots of acceleration, meaning more stress on the belt than cruising steadily. Also more starting/stopping of the engine.. And the winter's can't do belts no favours.

Definitely get the belt and tensioners done ASAP..

Thanks, folks.
I just found out about an Alfa specialist about a mile from where I work so i'll give them a call. The car has been a joy since day 1 so I intend to keep it that way.

Ask yourself: £300 every three years or over £1500 when the belt/tensioner fails and you need the engine rebuilt!!

It's a no-brainer really. Except for the usual running costs the car's hardly had anything spent on it so this can be its birthday present

£300 is a good price ... depending on where you are or where you are willing to travel to it may be more than that. This price is from AforAlfa in Aylesbury, Bucks and AlfaWorkshop in Royston, Herts.

Yes you must stick by the 3 year or 36K miles rule as jug pointed out. £300 seems ok to me.

Echo the above.... Best to get it changed!! Have you changed your engine oil since youve had it? I'd get this done if you havent changed it since having the car.

Re: Cam belt on low mileage 147

i think i paid about £325 for belts and water pump, at an indy in staines. seemed like a nice family outfit. - but they didn't change my aux belt! make sure you get your aux done too!
it was a cambelt kit + waterpump. someone here will know what the kit actually includes, just the belts I'd assume!

do you have the rattle on startup? you might need the variator done too, sods law its start rattling after you do the belts!

Re: Cam belt on low mileage 147

Just spoke to an local Alfa specialist. It would be £385 for the cam belt, tensioners etc. To do the water pump too would be £455 but he did mention that doing this often causes the varitor to throw a wobbly 2 months down the line. To do the whole lot he quoted £634.

The oil has been changed every 12 months since new so I would have this done again at the same time. Also, the brake fluid has never been done so i'm guessing this needs doing too.

The car is running absolutely fine as it is but I want to make sure it stays that way.

Re: Cam belt on low mileage 147

Changing the water pump screws the variator? Don't think so .. low or old oil will do that. You pump will probably be fine after such low mileage as will the variator (doesn't sound like a diesel on starting up does it?)

Definitely get the brake fluid done .. after this time it will have soaked up some atmospheric water ... it's amazing what a complete change does. Do the clutch as well as this is fed from same reservoir.

I think that's expensive! Would you care to name the 'local specialist'?

Guess we are with you couledie? 01' 12,000 plus, runs like a dream, and it's a Sele': Go with Gazza's thoughts on the servicing you require.: Two good choices if you are fairly close to either?:

Re: Cam belt on low mileage 147

My 147 had 25,000 miles on it and I done the cambelt at 35 months along with the balance belt variator and tensioners.

The belt was starting to crack and was going brittle, so glad I done it, the balance belt looked fine but I swapped it anyway.

So time and mileage are factors.

Re: Cam belt on low mileage 147

Changing water pump does not warrant extra £70. It takes just a few extra minutes when the belts are being done and the water pump does not cost that much.

Woodcock Car Sales in Hull. Seem to know what they're talking about.

Don't really want to travel too far as the fuel costs would cancel out any saving but obviously if there's a decent saving to be made at a place someone can vouch for then i'm interested.

Gazza, sorry I may have been a bit confusing. They didn't say the water pump would screw the variator. Bad wording on my part. What I think they were getting at is that if I get the cam belt and pump done only then it's sods law that the variator will decide to screw up a couple of months down the line.

Will defo get the brake fluid done. This I meant to do last year but after the service and aircon recharge I never got around to getting that done. Car has damn good brakes anyway. Better then the 156 I used to have which caused me serious bum twitches on many occasions.

Thanks for all the responses, folks. I'm no expert or an enthusiast but I fell in love with Alfas the day I took an unplanned testdrive in a 147. I guess the 147 is really my partner's car but guess who does the maintenance and TLC. Once we were a 2 Alfa family when I had the pleasure of owning a 156 Sportwagon 20V JTD for a year (before the third child came along). 27 months after saying goodbye I still miss that beauty.
