2.4 Jtd Engine Destroyed

Sick as a parrot. Out today in my faultless 156 and was on a little country road almos home when i hit a nasty bump on the road. Two miles on down the road and the car comes to a grinding halt. On inspection it appears that the sump split and the oil poured out and the rest is history. I am totally gutted and post christmas skint and really really ****ed off. Wife says she's gonna take roads service on but i know it will be a waste of time and money as they'll say i was driving to fast etc etc. I don't know what the next step is, i phoned my mechanic and he says the engine will most likely be a mess and it will probably be as wise to just find a replacement engine but he will look at it next week. It shuddered to a stop and i was yards from home and started it again and cruised to the house which was a dumb enough idea but i reckoned the damage was already terminal. I am surprised at how quick it was from impact until the engine packed up.
Any advice as to where i may find an engine or what sort of money i'm looking at would be a help as resources may be quite limited here in NIreland.

Re: 2.4 Jtd Engine Destroyed

the 140 and 150 is the same thing, same turbo, over the years they may have changed the injectors, check the last three didgits, some are 068 others 111, but you have these anyway.
the only difference was the ecu map to give an extra 10bhp.

Claim on the insurance - you do have fully comp right? A damaged sump is an accident, and a fully comp policy will cover it.

Re: 2.4 Jtd Engine Destroyed

Would the insurance seriously pay out on this? i am fully comp but didn't think that would be possible. Thanks for the tip and i suppose it is worth a try. I contacted the roads service today and they are sending me a claim pack but i am not holding out any hope on them paying

Try claiming off the council or whoever maintains the roads first but if not try your insurance, it is technically an accident, you had a collision. Obviously will affect your no claims etc. Might not save you money in the long run though, claiming on your insurance when you might be able to get a new engine for £500 and fitting shouldn't be too much trouble..

Re: 2.4 Jtd Engine Destroyed

Probably a good time to mention it - does anyone know of any springs that give the same ride height in the 2.4 JTD as Veloce/SportPack but are stiffer? 30% stiffer should do it, and some Koni/Bilstein shocks to help absorb the bumps. I'd do this to my JTD, but the only stiffer springs I can find lower the car 10mm over Veloce/SportPack, which I think will only compound the problem due to how low the sump is.

You might have to get an engineering firm to make a set up, I've never seen any for sale.. You wouldn't need to touch the rear springs though, only the front ones.

Re: 2.4 Jtd Engine Destroyed

Anybody know if this mess is likely to have destroyed my turbo? I know nothing about engines or cars but know a replacement engine comes without a turbo. Is there a high probability that mine is gone? there is a turbo on that ebay engine but i wouldn't be so confident of buying of this guy as he has some bad feedback and a breaker will offer some gaurantee.

Re: 2.4 Jtd Engine Destroyed

Insurance will pay out. Many years ago when my Dad worked for BMW HQ, a customer had a 528i which clouted it's alloy sump on a rock with the same end result, a seized engine. The car was fitted with a complete new engine FOC.

It's worth a few phone calls isn't it????

Re: 2.4 Jtd Engine Destroyed

Happened to me some years ago, but the oil was just dripping away through a crack. A new sump (what a hell of a job !) cured it. Ever since I drive mucho carefully over speedbumps.
If it ever happens , stop immediately and check sump, but thats too late now. I wish you luck

p.s. Alfa alloy sumps are too close to the road imho. for the old Gulia's you could fit a sump guard, but for 156's there is no room for it.

Have you got a strut brace? It stiffens up the front end and reduces bottoming - seriously makes a big difference on the 156 2.4.

Yes your Turbo would be now useless, as that too would've run without any oil and in the process destroyed the bearings and the seals. Feel sorry for you, I'm also looking for stiffer springs and shockers for my 147 so I can take the snake pass at a reasonable ast pace.

Re: 2.4 Jtd Engine Destroyed

sorry to hear of your problem.Have a sump guard mde up ,anything in mild steel weld 2mild steel brackets brackets each side so that if it does bottom out it will hit the guard but the mild steel brackets should crumple enough to asorb the full impact.HTH & good luck sorry to hear of your problem.

Re: 2.4 Jtd Engine Destroyed

I think you would have stood a good chance with your insurance..but you do have to tell them first, so you may have codsed your chances by buying an engine....but presumably its not fitted yet..so lodge a claim pronto..that what you have insurance for. But beware of them wanting to write it off. My inlaw had someone bash into his Mazda Xedos 6 in VGC with 65,000 on the clock. It only needed a front bumper, headlight, a/c condenser and radiator and they wrote it off!!! He could have bought it off them for £350..in fact I nearly did..just didnt have the space/time to fix it..shame..it was a lovely motor..leather etc

You would have claimed if you had hit a lamp post and bent the wing...wouldn't you??? Well you hit an unforseen big hole. If you can identify the hole the insurance company may sue the people responsible for the road and get their money back.

Very sorry it happened, and yes it does seem to be the only achilles heel of the 2.4..but for the rest of you its not unknown with the V6s either..so go steady.

Mine is a Tourismo 2.4, so rides higher..but even so there are a few heart stopping moments on big potholes/bumps. I wouldn't want mine lowered thankyou.

Your turbo may have survived..don't just assume its knackered as long as you didn't hammer it home with no oil.

Hope you get it fixed OK

Can I ask what the strut brace does?
I thought it helps to strenthen body flexing ,not suspension travel. Just trying to adapt ,adopt and improve my own car myself!

I put a upper strut brace on my 156 (come to think of it I did the rear one too - pig of a job). When I dropped the car into Rusper Alfa specialists, the mechanic said (nicely) that the upper braces do nothing on a 156, as there's a massive aluminium member behind the dash that does the same job anyhow. If you look at the 156, the struts are set back quite far (or the dash is set forward)! I wasn't going to argue with him... but I'm not sure my strut braces (either of them) have made any difference to the handling.

Re: 2.4 Jtd Engine Destroyed

tessmania, sorry to hear about your 'accident'. It's nearly happened to me a few times. The 156 2.3 jtd is notoriously underdamped. I had considered buying those yellow koni adjustibles at ~£200 for the front only but never got round to it. I really should!
