Hmmm 159 Engine braking: - Where'd it go?

Just got a new 1.8 (140bhp). Now this might be the smallest engine I've driven for a while but even my technical ineptitude knows itís not size that matters! Iím pretty sure Iím not imagining it but there appears to be markedly less engine braking in this car than anything else I have driven! If I am imagining it, then I am happy to be ridiculed! It just seems so obvious I had to ask. Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Not many people have the 1.8, as its a new engine, I ve drove both Jtds, the 2.2 and the 3.2 which engine brake fine.

Its a GM based unit - perhaps its low compression or some thing????

ehhhh pass!

Can't comment unfortunately as I haven't tried the new 1.8mpi either, however, you have me intrigued so I will endeavour to drive one over the next week or so and then pass comment

Heavy car, small engine - no braking.

Thanks for for the interest guys! I drove the Ds too and they seemed fine! EcosseOz, look forward to your assessment! Fraser................ouch, but alas, it is feeling a little more sluggish than I hoped! Was a gamble! However Angel having a nose next week. Fingers crossed they can get a little more life outta the beast - without compromising too much of course!

Don't worry MGN - it's still a fine car. You'll just need to adapt your driving style.

Re: 159 Engine braking: - Where'd it go?

MGN, I also have a 1.8 MPI and am a little disappointed at how sluggish it drives. Took a punt against the 1.9 JTD and it seems it was a poor bet !
Did Angel manage to get any more bhp out of your 159 or does anyone know of any quality mods that may increase torque ?
