Re: Boxer Engine Oil

I'd probably use a 10w40 semi synthetic.

Re: Boxer Engine Oil

owners manual for my Ti states 10/50
presumably for a bit more protection when hot!
and yes probably semi-synth.

unless someone knows different...

Alfa recommends Selenia 10w50 if you can find it.

I don't think the english climate justifies it though.

Re: Boxer Engine Oil

I use a 15W50 mineral oil as stated on the spec label/sticker on the bonnet. The grade of even mineral oils now is far superior to when the car was made 20+ years ago. However, my Sprint is not used during the winter, so having a slightly thicker oil is not a concern.

Re: Boxer Engine Oil

I also use Mineral oil in my Sprint because with it it doesnt consume it. I hava tried synthetic and semi and i always had to fill some after some time but with mineral i didnt had to...

Re: Boxer Engine Oil

I'd probably go for a Synthetic 10w60, 10w50 or 15w50

Several available from Motul, Silkolene, Redline, Castrol, etc..

Re: Boxer Engine Oil

When I used the 33 rather more for touring on the continent I used Selenia HPX, tend to use 10W-40 semi-synthetic mostly these days.

Re: Boxer Engine Oil

I've looked in the owners handbook and it states 10w50 or 15w50 so I don't suppose it matters which one it is as long as I use a good brand. The Sprint is using mineral oil in it at the moment so thats what I will go with. I've checked the oil level today and after about 600 miles I've done in it, it hasn't appeared to use any oil at all, wish my 147 was like that

Thanks again guys

Re: Boxer Engine Oil

On the other hand I've been using Selenia StAR 5-40 for some tens of thousands of kms without any oil consumption or any other problems. I'll be using AMSOIL AFL 5-40 in my 16V engine when it's ready.

I think that there is really no need to use a thick oil like 15-50 in an engine that will not consume a good synthetic 5-40 with a thick film, especially in a country with relatively cold climate like the UK.

Re: Boxer Engine Oil

Well, I can get hold of 15w50 mineral made by Comma with the spec of ACEA A2 B2 API SL CF if that would be ok?. I just can not get hold of 10w50.

Re: Boxer Engine Oil

That will be absolutely fine, as its an API SL spec which is much higher spec than the original API SG(i think-may even have been SF!)specified by Alfa when the car was new.

Re: Boxer Engine Oil

the 15 is better than a 10 for an old design engine anyhow.

Just had a look at the sticker under the bonnet (1988 33) and it states 10W-50, spec. SE !! Agip Sint.
