Engine Oil Change Frequency

I need your advice regarding oil change frequency. I am the owner of a 147 1.6TS. According to the factory (and dealer) engine oil change should take place every 20,000kms or yearly (what-ever comes first). What do you recommend? Are there any people here that change engine oil more frequently?

Thanks!

Re: Engine Oil Change Frequency

At least as often as the manufaturer recommends.

More frequently if the engine is subjected to regular hard work like track days or competition.

It is pretty well accepted that more frequent oil changes extend engine life - perhaps this is slightly less true since the advent of synthetic oils over the old multigrades.

The more frequent the better for the mechanical components, Stings the pocket a little, but looks after the internals, to give longevity.:

Re: Engine Oil Change Frequency

To do 20.000km you must be using either Selenia 20k, or another suitable long life oil.
If you are not using a long life oil, then you should do the oil change intervals at the mileage that the oil manufacturer reccoments.

If you are using the car hard, then you should definetely change the oil more frequent, even if using long life oil

20000km (12000miles) isn't what you would call "longlife", it is normal mileage. "Longlife" refers to change intervals higher than that, ie 18000miles (close to 30000km).

As long as you use a good quality oil (ie not Tesco Value Motor Oil) it will be fine.

Obviously changing at shorter intervals (ie 6-months/6000miles/10000km) will not do any harm to the car.

Re: Engine Oil Change Frequency

The dealer recommended service interval in this country is 5,000kms !! not only from Alfa but most other manufacturers too - this is due to the heat and dust etc.

I change the engine oil every 7,000-10,000kms, which is about every 3-4 months for me. I also change the gearbox oil every year - its cheap enough to do when the car is in for service anyway - its 45degC here for 3 months of the year so its not worth taking any risks.

Having your own oil well in the back garden probably helps too!

In the USA 3000miles/3-months was the norm too...!

LOL, we use Tesco motor oil in our lawnmower..

IMO 12,000 miles is too long to leave any oil in an Alfa engine even selenia 20K. I would personally change it at 6,000 miles, especially in a TS.

Remember Alfa's longer change times were mainly a selling point, and were not nessesarily optimum for engine longevity.

And the only reason they recommend Selenia is that it used to be owned by Fiat, as said before any decent brand with the correct specs API SL/SM or ACEA A3/B3/B4 etc..

Qatar is one of the wealthiest countries in the world....none of its mine though

The local Alfa dealer has a labour rate of something like £20/hour so servicing is pretty cheap.....I'm not looking forward to the day when I have to return to the UK.

I wouldn't hurt to change the car every 10,000km and is likely to have long term benefits.

I've used selenia 20k since Day 1 of ownership. Have always changed it every 10,000km.

Re: Engine Oil Change Frequency

.

UK.

Hello again to all,

Personally i believe that the 12,000 miles oil change interval is perfectly ok for a quality fully synthetic (inc top ups which are quiet frequent anyway) oil.

or

6,000 miles for a quality semi synthectic oil.

This has been my rule on all my previous cars and i have had no problems at all.

Re: Engine Oil Change Frequency

Thanks guys. I guess it will not be bad to change it every six months or 10,000kms.

Re: Engine Oil Change Frequency

the 12 months 12/20K is fine.

Unless hard running or cold starts are experienced.

Or the old oil is manky!
