156 v6 black smoke and hesitancy after belt change

Just had the cambelt replaced on my 156 v6, the garage rang to say that there is now an engine management light on, black smoke on start up and hesitancy at part throttle, none of which were present when I drove it in, any ideas ?

Were they Alfa specialists who did the work? If so they should be telling you what the problem is

Could it be a damaged coilpack causing the problem. It would cause a misfire, not sure about the black smoke though. I'm sure someone will be able to offer more help soon enough.

Not good news that

Probably the timing is off I would have said. Black smoke is overfuelling/fuel not being burnt properly. Not sure how that works on a petrol..

EDIT: Who was it that did the work? Main dealer, Alfa specialist or local garage?

It was done by a reputable local ferrari/ Porsche specialist that I have used before. Seems strange that it just happened after the belt change.

It's not so strange. You took your car in to have the timing belt changed and now the symptoms would seem to indicate that the timing may be out. You said they are a reputable Ferrari/Porsche specialist but I wonder how different those engines are to the V6 lump? The timing belt change on the Alfa V6 is notoriously awkward and should only be undertaken by an Alfa specialist. Just my opinion. Hope you get it all sorted ok. In reality you took your car in there in working order, I wouldn't let them return it to you in any other condition.

Owning an Alfa is not a matter of life or death...... It's much more important than that.

Yes the cambelt change on the V6 is tricky and should be done by an Alfa specialist or Alfa dealer. It's either cambelt timing out or they've knocked something badly. If it was ok when it went in, refuse to take it until it's sorted out, and demand a discount on the job itself for all the inconvenience. Good luck.

In case of an argument, ask them to show or describe the special tools (cam locks, odp gauge etc.) to perform this high skilled job.
