Hmmm Cam Belt Broke

Dear all,

I'm looking for some re assurance.

I have a 03 156 Lusso and sadly my cam belt broke on Saturday. I've now had it towed to my local Alfa dealer and they are "looking" at it now.

I have heard that 03 engines and newer, have a fiat non sync engine and that a cam belt breaking won't do the valves any damage at all, could this be true?

If you could let me know if I'm going to have to sell my granny to cover the cost of a major repair, then please do so.

I'm hoping that my buddy is right and it'll just be the cost of the belt and a few hours labour.

Cheers

Re: Cam Belt Broke

Nope, all valves will likely be damaged

..its essential to adhere to the 36K or 3 year service interval.
I'm guessing that you are still on the original belt after close to 5 years?

Hope you granny takes the news well

Re: Cam Belt Broke

Sorry mate, you will have damage to the valves.

If you repair the head, you must replace the big-end bearing shells also as you commonly get flat spots caused by belt breaks. This means you pay for the engine to be fixed and then a few thousand miles later the bottom end goes.

As Chris says. Have a look at the link and you'll see what can happen as a result of shock loading the engine.

From what I have read on here, ItalAutos may be able to fit a reconditioned engine in, with a guarantee, cheaper than Alfa can repair one for you. Here's a link for you:

Re: Cam Belt Broke

If it's any help, the last 147 2.0 Twinspark I did in the workshop with a stripped belt which needed valves and big end bearings was done for £1220 inc vat. Again the customer was pretty shocked, but I did warn them the belt was overdue back in August. Is yours the JTS engine?

Hope this news is better than you feared.
