Horrible engine noise

On firday I parked my car up at the girlfriends, and left one fo the lights on. Came to sunday and there was no charge left so had to call out the RAC (very good, came in 40 minutes vs 6 hours for the AA).

Anyway when we got the engine started it ran rough as anything, sounded like a loud popping noise from the air intake and the engine itself was vibrating very heavily on the mounts, it looked like it was going to jump out of the engine bay.

After about a minute it stopped and ran properly, RAC guy said it sounded like a sticking valve, would this have caused any damage? Is there any reason for it?

Re: Horrible engine noise

Under voltage battery may cause all sorts of problems with electronic units. Or there could have been a plug fouled and then it cleared itself. If you need any tools I'm in Croydon too!

Maybe the ECU was having to "re learn" some of its settings? Or perhaps its even in limp home mode. Can you get the fault codes read?

Re: Horrible engine noise

Its almost certainly nothing more than a low voltage issue. These cars need a battery in tip top nick to start and run properly. There is considerable demand on them if you are operating the starter and wanting a half decent spark.

Get the battery tested and replace it if it is past its best.

Battery is fine, no fault codes. Its just leaving the light on for 2 days drained all the juice, the RAC man checked it and said it was charging correctly and was in very good condition.

Re: Horrible engine noise

More likely to be knackered plugs.

My engine started doing this a year ago. Stopped near Tower Bridge and popped bonnet. As you said, engine looked like it was gonna rip itself off the mounts. When revved above 3k all was ok.

Thought it might have been MAF so disconnected it. No change.

Garage inspected plugs (didn't yet have RIBE tools) and found they needed replacing. Also, the nearest to cambelt end had oil/water in hole from overzealous oil filling sometime in the past.

After that, ran sweet.

Re: Horrible engine noise

Plugs are new, although the oil was changed a few weeks ago (Selenia Racing 10w60), I will check the holes.
