Noise from Cam Belt Tensioner 156 V6

Hi

Had a ticking noise that comes from the Cam Belt Tensioner for a few days now. Noise increases as the revs increase.

Had an overheat recently where I seemed to lose all of my water. (not from under the car - there just wasn't any in the system - although it's always been fine) I've topped it up again but I can't make the water go, so don't think it's a leak.

Starting to get scared to use the car now - anyone with any thoughts?

Can the tensioners be adjusted or do they need to be replaced and if so that sounds like the whole cambelt thing...

Cheers

K

The tensioners are self adjusting, so if it is starting to tick then the bearing is starting to go.
It may last for quite a long time like it is but do you want t take the risk? Don`t panic too much, if it has just started then you should be ok for few thousand miles yet but don`t hang about for too long.
If you are changing the tensioner then you have to change the belt really. It depends on how recent the previous change was as to whether the idlers should be changed as well, all though are you sure it is the tensioner and not an idler that is ticking? See - best to change the lot and feel safe and you can also check out the water pump whilst you are at it.

New belt three years and 22.5k miles ago.

That's what the RAC (breakdown service) man said (although it didn't 'breakdown').

It's the pulley on the bottom left as you look at the belt with the covers off.

How do you tell if the water pump isn't working? I'm guessing if it isn't then this could have been the reason for the overheat (despite the fact that it was about 2 degrees C here)

Pre-packed bearings with grease, combined with heat, never was an ideal mix!:

Were the idler and tensioner changed? These should always be changed as they are more liable to go than the belt is if you don't!

Yes, if the water pump is failing then you will overheat. Cracked water pump impellers are a common enough V6 fault. With a failing water pump you will probably notice that you are ok around town but of you push the car hard (fast motorway work) then the heat will rise alarmingly.

You should go for a full belt/idler/tensioner/waterpump change.

Bummer that something has failed then, but you still need to change them all, it just isn`t worth the risk against the cost of the new parts.

I am just finding out how much it's going to cost to get the water pump done at the same time from an indi.
